Description

In this lesson, students learn about Narrative Tenses through guided discovery based on a reading text about a film based on a true story. The lesson starts with the trailer of the movie as students have already read the true story on which the film based and whole class discussion about the differences and similarities. This is followed by a reading text about the story in which students are exposed to the target language. Later, there is some controlled practice through gap - filling and sentence reformulation. Finally, for free practice, students in groups are given a plot summary with no ending and they are asked to write their own ending in groups.

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher shows a two-minute video about the trailer of the movie which is mentioned in the reading text that students has been working and starts a discussion about the similarities and differences between the true story which is on the text and the movie trailer based on the true story.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The teacher asks ss to read second paragraph in the reading text on p. 33 and answer the following questions: 1. What happened to Philippe? 2. How did Philippe and Abdel meet? As the target langauge is narrative tenses, ss are expected to summarise the events. When the ss find the answers individually, they compare their answers and summary with their pairs and after that the T receives whole class feedback.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Students are asked to go through the questions in 4a and try to choose the correct answers and then check from the article (in pairs). After that the T shows the asnwer key

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning and form of the target language

The teacher asks some CCQ's (4B) to clarify the meaning and form of the target structure. They analyse positive / negative and question forms by eliciting them from the ss (4C).

Controlled Practice (8-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students are then directed to page 137 to go through exercises A and B. The students then discuss their answers in pairs. Board race (ss run to the board to write the answers) can be done to make it fun. Meanwhile, T ask some CCQ's (in the form of a yes/no question) to consolidate the meaning and the form.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss are divided into groups and each group receives the same plot summary (only the introduction part) of a movie based on a true story. They are asked to complete the plot summary in their own words and post it on Padlet so that everyone see and comment on the plots. In the end, ss vote for the best plot summary.
