Listening: Unusual Pastimes

Description

In this lesson, sts will practice listening for gist and specific information. Later, they will practice speaking by way of discussing extreme weather in their locality and interview each other about their hobbies.

Main Aims

  • To provide students an opportunity to practice listing for just and specific information

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students an opportunity to practice speaking by asking questions any specific food

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will play short YouTube video clip showing extreme weather to set the context of the lesson I will also try to elicit the term "Storm Chasers" and link it to the video.

Pre-Listening (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text.

Students will read the advertisement on the student handout page 8 then they will work in pairs and talk about if they would like to go on the tour and give the reasons for why or why not.

Listening for gist (5-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity for students to listen to a context using the sub skill of gisting.

Students will listen to a dialogue between two old friends and answer the questions working in pairs. Afterwards students will give check answers with partner.

Listening for specific information (5-8 minutes) • To provide students an opportunity to use the sub skill of scanning to listen for detail information to answer questions about the listening activity

Students will listen to the audio track for a second time and listen for specific information to answer the questions while working in pairs. Students will be given an answer key to check the answers to the questions.

Post-Listening activity: Conducting an interview (10-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to create and respond to questions related to their activities and hobbies.

Since students have already had prior practice from the previous lesson on the use of auxiliary verbs, we will complete exercise 4 page 8. Students will revise and create questions using the proper auxiliary verb to ask questions and interview each other about their hobbies. I would try to take notes of the more interesting activities and share them with the class.

Post-Listening Activity #2 (3-6 minutes) • To provide an opportunity for students to discuss the types of extreme weather in their country

If there is time left after the first post activity students will divide into small groups and discuss the types of extreme weather in their area and the last big storm that they witnessed. We would take the most interesting answers and share as WCFB.
