TP4 Lexis
Upper-Intermediate level

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of extreme adjectives in the context of events and celebrations.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with an opportunity to gain fluency and accuracy when speaking.

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T presents Ss with several photos of events and celebrations and asks them to identify them (carnival, concert, march, etc.). T asks Ss to think about the last event they attended and text another student on the chatbox. They should write what event it was and 4 adjectives that they would use to describe it or some of its components. For example: football match / noisy / crowded / excited (of the people that were there) / exhausted (how they felt). Each S will read what their classmates sent them.

Text work (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text about an event.

Ss are asked to read two almost identical texts about the same event: one using plain adjectives and the other with extreme adjectives. They should note the differences and say which of the two is more expressive, more lively. T may invite two Ss to read them aloud before feedback.

MFP (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

In order to start working with meaning, Ss will be given a brief game in which they have to match 6 extreme adjectives with another 6, forming pairs. It is a matching and memory game but since each pair is illustrated, Ss will be able to deduce the meaning. After that, T will start clarifying M, P and F. CQC

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss do activity 3 individually. (4 minutes) Activity 3: Complete the sentences with "very", "absolutely" or an extreme adjective. OCFB T will ask Ss to read out the mini-dialogues in pairs to check pronunciation.

Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with freer practice of the target language

T tells Ss to look at the pictures from the lead-in again. This time, they will be able to talk about a real event they attended or an imaginary one. The aim of the activity is to make the description of the event or celebration as interesting as possible. Ss have 2 minutes to think and then T sends them to BOR so they share their productions. They are allowed to ask each other questions. (5 minutes) Ss will be provided with a prompt with aspects they can consider when describing an event (atmosphere, music, etc.) and another with more extreme adjectives that they may know (exhausted, tiny, etc.) If there is time, T will encourage Ss to share with the rest of the class and we may choose the most descriptive one.

Delayed error correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide delayed error correction

T focuses on mistakes / good language.
