To provide clarification and practice of used to + inf and be/get + used to +ing in the context of habits.
Subsidiary Aims

To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about habits in the context of conversation between friends.
Procedure (45-59 minutes)
- Show the students a picture of a girl doing different activities. - Ask the students questions about the picture. Ex: what is she doing? are they good or bad habits. - Ask the students to discuss one good habit they have and one bad habit in pairs. - whole class feedback.
- put the students in pair and give clear instructions about the activity; reading for gist. - Read the dialogue between four friends and choose the correct answer. Ex: what are the four friends talking about? a) Their habits b) Their memories c) Their plans for the future - The whole class feedback. - Put students in pairs again and give clear instructions about reading for specific information. - students read the text again and choose the right answer. Ex: what does Sara like to do every morning? a) running b) drinking coffee c) writing her to do list - The whole class feedback. - peer correction if necessary.
- Provide students with some questions to guide them to work out the target language on their own. - students work in pairs. - Whole class feedback. - Ask the students to highlight the target language in the text.
- Clarifies the form with examples on the board. - Write the rules on the board. - Students pick up examples from the text. -Ask questions to check understanding. Ex: Do we use be + used to + ing to talk about current habits? - Model the pronunciation and drill it with the students.
- Write sentences on the board. - Ask the students to decide whether the verb in each sentence is in the right form or not, and if it is wrong ask them to correct it. - Model the first sentence and then make the students take turns.
- Put students in groups and give them clear instructions about the activity. - Ask students to complete the sentences deciding whether ( used to + infinitive, be used to + ing, or get used to + ing) is the correct answer. - Whole class feedback.
- Put students in pairs and give clear instructions about the activity. - each student should form three sentences, the first about old habit, the second about current habit and the third about a habit trying to become familiar with, all while using the correct form of ( used to, be used to, get used to). - Whole class feedback.
