Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide clarification of Collocations with the verb get in the context of work, relationships, health ie: get paid, get a job, get married, get on well with, get ill, get better
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide inference and deduction reading practice using a text about Work, Relationships, Health in the context of Learning how to use get collocations appropriately in accordance to their context "get an offer" vs. "get a job"
Procedure (40-45 minutes)
Slide prompts two questions about change for each S to think about and answer personally. Using Teacher Model method, I have provided an example of my own answers (subtly using collocations). Ss will be asked to take a minute and think of their own answers before sharing vocally or in the chat box. Change is a relative subject and we will observe each other's answers and which collocations they (un)intentionally use.
Slide shows six images with list of TL collocations. Ss will be given three minutes to decide which image pairs appropriately with each collocation before nominating speakers in OCFB.
Slide shows definition of collocations with selective TL examples, meaning, form, pronunciation and appropriacy that will be used in gist practice to the right of the slide. Ss will work in pairs to discuss their answers for the correct collocation for each blank space before OCFB.
Ss will use gist activity practice to observe appropriacy of context, as meaning, form and pronunciation are discussed on left side of slide.
Ss will work in pairs to deduce correct get collocation for each sentence based on TL learned. Ss will re-group and by way of nominating speaker from each group, we will go through the six examples and check for clarification on any incorrect answers.
To prepare Ss for freer speaking practice, I will remind class that "get" or "got" is a very common collocation verb in English and can be used for many different contexts as we will have seen throughout the lesson. I will refer back to original lead-in questions/answers to ask Ss to identify the "get" or "got" collocations that were used in the context of change.
Ss will have a slide of questions using the TL "get" collocations learned in the lesson. In new pair groups, they will have BOR to practice asking and answering each question. I will observe each room to check for anymore DEC.
