Adjectives
Grade 2 beginners level

Description

In this lesson, students learn what are adjectives, how to identify adjectives and how to use them correctly in sentences. Students explore with the teacher examples of adjectives in sentences and try to produce their own adjectives. The teacher emphasizes correct sentence structure. Students say the sentences orally. Students look at a group of pictures and use adjectives to describe the pictures.

  • Students will be able to list several types of adjectives: size, number, color, feeling. Students will be able recognize adjectives used in sentences . Students will be able to write proper sentences using adjectives sed in sentences

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with sufficient vocabualry to help with writing.

Procedure

Park scene (5 minutes) • Introduce adjectives

Students are divided into groups of 3. Each group has a copy of the discussion picture. On the projector, show students a picture of a park scene with lots of descriptive detail. Tell students to identify as many nouns as possible. (Elicit: what are nouns?) Look for boys, girls, pets, bikes, kites

Exposure (10-15 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Each group states the nouns they picked out. While presenting, teacher guides students to describe in one word the noun they are talking about Which girl? Which balloon? How many children are playing at the park? With the next group, students are asked to say one descriptive word about the noun they are pointing out , e.g. The blue bike, the brown dog, the old lady , When all students have presented in this manner, tell students that a word that describes a noun is called an adjective. Teacher prompts /supplies vocabulary to help students

Highlighting (5-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Explain that adjectives describe nouns. The adjective comes before the noun e.g. young girl, hungry boy Adjectives can talk about; size, number, feeling, color, how something feels We use adjectives to make our writing sound interesting.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Show students a slide on projector with sample sentences. Ask students to identify the adjectives in each sentence. Ask students to identify the nouns being described. Students are asked to list adjectives that describe pictures shown on the projector. Teacher makes sure all students have participated. Teacher asks shy students directly.

Semi-Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students are back to group work. For each noun they identified earlier, they will write a sentence using an adjective. Remind students those adjectives come before the nouns. Remind students to capitalize and punctuate their sentences. Teacher goes around the groups and monitors; listens for wrong sentence structure. Teacher stops by each group and offers guidance.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Individual work. Worksheet on adjectives is distributed and students solve individually.
