Procedure (37-45 minutes)
Show Slide 1 - which depicts famous film posters - and ask them if they like watching films and if they have a favourite - or favourite kind of film. Has Covid affected their film tastes? E.g. preferring to watch happy movies?
Show Slide 2 - my film review - and highlight the gist reading questions. Set the reading task in open class. Give up to 3 minutes for this. Then FB and next slide - 3 - to ask them to identify the components of a film review.
Progress through Slides 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 to look at the language components of the introduction - the plot description - and the final recommendation. 4/5. Introduction - flim genre, sentences to give information about actors, director and release date. 6. Middle paragraphs - how to start to describe what happens. 'It's set in....time/place' and 'It's about ...' 7/8. Conclusion - describe its quality (e.g. funny, scary, moving, feel-good, tense) and make recommendations (you must see it/you'd love it/ I wouldn't recommend it/it was disappointing).
Show Slide 9. Explain that students will compose their own film review. ICQs first. Students will have up to 10 minutes to do this alone then go to BOR (in groups of 3) to share their work.
Students will be asked for their feedback on the task. What did they find out about their classmates' choice of film? 2 mins. One student will be invited to screenshare their review for feedback and error correction in open class. If time, I will post up other corrections from pieces shared during BOR. 5 mins
