Main Aims

  • By the end of the class students will be able to recognize and use the simple past form of be (affirmative and negative) in the context of describing social events, in this case a party.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about parties in the context of social events

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show slide 1. Students will see a photograph of a party. Ask students to brainstorm things they think are very important to have at a party. e.g. good food. Elicit some examples to have students mention more information. e.g. I love tacos. How about you?

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Show slide 2. Tell students they'll read the text and complete the following sentences. Show students they do not need to focus on understanding, they just need to go over the text to complete the information. Sentences It was her thirteenth birthday. The party was big. There were 30 people. it was a very hot day. Robert wasn't at the party. He was ill. His brother wasn't at the party. They are in the USA. Give students 3 minutes to complete the sentences. Tell students they need to check the answers in pairs. Give students 2 minutes. Conduct OCFB (just show correct answers).

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

On a different slide, show students the sentences from the previous activity. Ask students to mention whether they are negative or affirmative (meaning rather than form).

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

MF Tell students to open link 2. The activity will have the same sentences as in exposure, but relevant information will be highlighted. Examples: There were 30 people. it was a very hot day. Robert wasn't at the party. He was ill. His brother weren't at the party. They are in the USA. Learners will answer a test where they need to find both meaning and form by themselves (pair work). Tell Ss they will have 4 minutes to get the answers. Conduct OCFB, just show answers. Pronunciation Tell students they will listen to a couple of sentences. Show the stress paterns on the screen. Model and drill. See slide Pronunciation.

Controlled Practice (10-11 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Tell students to open link 3. It's a wordwall game where students must use was, wasn't, were and weren't. Tell students to complete the activity in pairs. Ask students to take a screenshot/picture of their answeris. Tell students they have 4 minutes to complete the activity. Once students are back, shift groups and tell them to paircheck. Conduct OCFB (just show the answers).

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Free practice 5 minutes Tell students they now have 1 minute to think of their last birthday parties. Ask students to mention what there was in there parties and what they did. Provide an example. It was my 23rd birthday party. It was in my house. I invited some friends. My bestfriend wasn't there. He was busy. We ordered some food. The food was not very delicious. We talked about our lives. It was a nice little party. Now ask students to join BORs. Tell them they have 4 minutes. Conduct DEC 5 minutes
