To provide clarification of vocabulary in the context of happy memories
Procedure (36-45 minutes)
Show students slide 1. Tell them about swimming in the pool last summer. That is a happy memory. "What are your happy memories and fun times?" Encourage participation. I'll begin a list of words I hear them use that are "happy memory" words.
Use the 'Lisa ' slide to set the foundation for the difference between using ago vs. last in a sentence. Ask students leading questions about the time frame of Lisa's life. "What was her most recent birthday/meal/accomplishment?" "How old is Lisa now?" (Use the CCQs to check for understanding as needed: Did you have dinner yet? Was that the 'last' meal you ate? Was it the most recent? Did you have dinner yesterday? Did you have dinner today? Which meal was most recent? When was your last birthday? How old are you now? So, on your 'last' birthday you turned___? Are you still ____? ) Use the 'ago' and 'last' slides to reinforce as needed. model the sentences focusing on the 'time' words as well as words that are useful to show happiness or good times. Make a list for students to use in conversation.
Switch to word wall. Students will play a game with me, to reinforce ago vs. last. To accomplish moving sentences into the correct category students will need to read and speak the 'ago' and 'last' phrases. I will ask them where to move the sentences and the whole class will offer me feedback and reasons for the choices. If I make a "mistake" they will help me correct my error. This will reinforce the use and pronunciation of sentences with 'ago' and 'last.' I will show students my brief list of "happy memory "words to use as they converse. We will briefly find a synonym or attach a meaning to them. Students can take a screen shot to refer to in the next stage.
Students will spin the wheel in wordwall to find out which sentences they will finish and elaborate on for/ with their partners. Do the first one for/with them. They will take turns. All the sentences require them to explain something in their own lives using 'last ' or 'ago.' These will be happy memories. I will monitor and listen for error to use in DEC and OCFB.
Ask students what their favorite happy memory was from the word wheel or what they enjoyed most that their partner told them. Use this opportunity for DEC both from monitoring in the previous stage and from what I hear at this point.
