Description

In this lesson, students will learn about (in)transitive verbs.

Materials

Main Aims

  • Students will have better understanding of intransitive and transitive verbs.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of complaining neighbours.

Procedure

Lead-in (3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show Slide 1: Ask students the difference between house and flat. Lead into the topic about neighbours.

Exposure (8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ss will have 1 min to read the text first, then hear the sounds: "1 min to read the 8 sentences." "listen to 8 sounds and write 1-8 in the boxes" ICQ: "Will you hear the sentences?" - "no" - "You will hear the sounds, not the sentences." The peer feedback and OCFB Anticipated problem: Ss may need to hear twice since it's a lot to read and hard to connect the number to sentences.

Highlighting (3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Show Jamboard page 1: Ask Sst to underline the verb and verb phrases Use the first 2 sentences as examples, to show the differences between Verb and Verb phrases. CCQ: "If I delete the object after the verb, do we know what it means?" - "No" - "Some verbs have an object, some not."

Clarification (10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning - 2 mins: Use Words Match on Nearpod to check meanings. OCFB Anticipated problem: the meaning part shouldn't be challenging to Ss. Form - 6 mins: Show Jamboard 5-8: Ask Ss what is "V. + object", what is "V." Use "cry" as an example, to show students how to find the answer in sentences. Ss will have 2 mins to finish it. Peer FB - 2 mins OCFB- 2 mins Pronunciation: 4 mins Jambord 9-12 Ss will have 2 mins to match the words with IPA. OCFB: 2 mins Anticipated problem: Ss may mispronounce the vowels: /ɑː/, /æ/, /eɪ/

Controlled Practice (8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss will finish a matching activity - 3 mins: ICQ: "XX, can you guess what we will do now?" Peer check - 2 mins OCFB- 3 mins: Ss will present the answer in pairs as a Role-play. Ss will change the role after 4 conversations.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Jamboard 17 Ss in pairs to discuss the 3 questions - 5 mins OCFB: 3 mins

Free Practice (optional) (8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Role-play: Show Jamboard 18: Ask a student to read the topic: Complaining about your noisy neighbours! Ss have 3 mins with a partner to think about a short conversation about complaining neighbours. OCFB: Ss can present their conversation in the classroom - 5 mins.
