Description

In this lesson, students will learn compound nouns and collocations. They will also have the opportunity to practice their speaking skills using these compound nouns and collocations.

Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson students will have learnt some compound nouns and collocations which are widely used in real life situations.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of this lesson students will have practiced listening and speaking about compound nouns and collocations.

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To catch Ss' attention on the topic

Greet the students Show the first picture and ask the pairs for each picture When "shopping centre" slide appears, tell them that both of the words are nouns

Vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • To introduce new vocabulary (compound nouns)

Divide the classroom into 2 groups. Tell the Ss that this is a new activity and to listen carefully "You are doing this activity in groups. Your colours are yellow and red. There are 11 compound nouns. You will get first parts of compound nouns. You must find the other parts outside the classroom, around the common room. There are pictures for 2 of the compound nouns. Find all the words, come inside the classroom and stick them on the board. But only take your colour. Finish first, then you are winners." ICQs: "Are you doing the activity inside?" "How many groups are there? What are their names?" "Where must you put the compound nouns?"

Listening (5-6 minutes) • To enable students to listen for specific information

Tell the students that they are going to listen to 3 conversations and they need to write the compound words Play the audio (Twice if needed) When they finish, ask them to check in pairs and monitor them ICQs: "Is this a speaking activity?" "How many dialogues are there?"

Speking (5-6 minutes) • To enable students define some basic items of vocabulary

Instruct the students this is a group activity. There are 2 groups for this activity and one student from each groups sits on a chair facing his/her friends. Teacher writes a compound word from the first activity on the board and his/her group defines/explains the word and the student guesses. They must not show the objects in the classroom or use a part of the compound noun to define it or they will lose 1 point. Every correct answer gets 1 point. Each student has 30 seconds to guess the word. ICQs: "How much time do you have to tell the word?"

Vocabulary (6-7 minutes) • To enable students learn some vocabulary which are widely used in real life situations( collocations)

Tell the students that they are familiar with this activity. Students must make 3 groups. Give 3 copies to each group and tell them to match the words to the correct nouns. When they finish the activity switch 2 students from each group with other 2 students.

Listening (5-6 minutes) • To enable students to listen for specific information

Tell the students that there are 10 conversations and they need to write the collocation in each sentence. Play the audio twice if needed. Ask them to check in groups. ICQs: "How many dialogues are there?"

Freer Practice (6-7 minutes) • To enable students to use the vocabulary they recently learnt

Tell the students that this activity will be done outside the classroom. They need to find 2 people who does one of the hobbies/activities in the list by asking Wh- questions. Tell them what kind of question they can ask. "Can/Do you ride a bike?" "Do you watch ....?" Get them outside. Note down any errors. When they finish get their answers and write any errors on the board and ask them to label.
