Materials

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of writing an email/letter to a friend asking for advice

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice using useful language on giving advice.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students where see a slide with some funny helpful advice. I will then ask them what is the best advice they have ever received? I will give them a few minutes to discuss this topic.

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

I will show the students 2 emails that I wrote asking and offering advice. I will tell them to take a screen shot so they can have it later. If they can not, I will give them a link. I will give them a few minutes to read the letter. Hi Tarina,   How are you and your family? I hope you are doing well. I was writing because Sam is planning to visit Montreal for a few days. Since you lived there, I was hoping you could give him some advice on what to do while he is there.   Thank you, Angela Hey Sam,   I was so happy to hear from your mom that you are planning to visit Montreal for a few days. The most important thing to do is to visit in the summer, as you will want to spend a lot of time outside. You have to eat at Schwartz’s Deli and have a smoked meat sandwich. They are world famous and delicious. Next, you could go on a hike at Mount Royal Park. It is so beautiful and free. I would suggest taking the bus up to the top of the mountain and then enjoying the walk down. Otherwise, you will be too tired to enjoy it. Whatever you decide to do, you will have a great time. Montreal is a wonderful place to visit.   Hope this helps, Tarina I will point out the way that we start a friendly letter. Hi or hey is appropriate for a letter to a friend. Should we start a letter to our boss like this? NO In the body of the letter advice is being offered. What am I offering advice about? Advice on what to do in Montreal. I will point out how we end a friendly letter. Thanks and hope this helps. Thanks is always appropriate where as hope this helps works if you are offering the reader help in the body of the email. Does hope this helps make sense if we are not helping them? NO Last is the signature.

Useful Language (5-6 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

I will show the students sentences that are useful for offering advice. 1.The most important thing to do is to visit in the summer, as you will want to spend a lot of time outside. 2. You have to eat at Schwartz’s Deli and have a smoked meat sandwich. 3. You could go on a hike at Mount Royal Park. 4. I would suggest taking the bus up to the top of the mountain What is the writer doing in these sentences? offering advice. You have to is a way of saying you will really want to do this. You could and I would suggest is a much softer way of offering advice. I will then show the proper form and have the students notice the verbs that follow the useful language. Is it a base form verb or ing verb? I will show them the AK.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Students will then be shown a slide with the prompt, Pretend a friend is going to visit your city, write an email giving them advice on where to go and what to do. I will remind them about the email that they took a screen shot and also put the link in the chat. On the same slide there is ideas, useful language and forms, as well as questions to help them write their friendly letters. I will tell them they must type their letters because they need to take a screen shot and share them. Are you writing these in a notebook? NO are you typing them on the computer? Yes I will give student 10 minutes to write their letters. Publishing Next I will tell the students they are going into BOR in groups of 2 or 3 where they will share their letters with their partners in a screen shot and they will make comment on them for accuracy and content. What should you be doing in the BOR? Sharing or letter What should your partner be doing? Correcting it you will have 8 minutes. During this time I will go to each BOR and make sure everyone is on track and understands. After that I will watch for mistakes and make notes.

Feedback and Error Correction (7-8 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

I will ask if one of the students would like to share their email. We will read it for content and correct it and comment on it as a class. Next I will write several mistakes that I saw on the board as well as some sentences to praise. I will ask the students to correct the sentences that need correcting.
