Procedure (36-45 minutes)
-T presents Jamboard with context-related pictures of celebrations from around the world. T elicits from SS what is going on in each picture/what they're celebrating.
-T shares link to Sites showing the same pictures but with a fill in the blank Forms activity. -SS fill in blanks from the answers provided in the list. -T plays audio for SS to check their answers. -T checks if SS have any questions.
MEANING (4 MINS) -T presents Slides showing the different marker sentences from gist activity -T elicits from SS what a relative pronoun is, explains if necessary. -T provides first example sentence "one day that has special meaning in Mexico is November 2nd." Meaning: One day has special meaning. That day is November 2nd. We use "that" because a day is a thing. -T checks understanding by completing the next one with the class. -SS do the same in pairs in B/O rooms. -Check answers in OCFB, confirm that SS understand that the relative pronoun is what allows us to consolidate the information and turn two sentences into one. FORM (5 MINS) -T presents SS with the same marker sentences with the relative pronouns underlined. -T puts two examples close together, one defining and one non-defining. Elicits from SS what the structural difference is between the two (commas in one and not the other). -T continues eliciting from SS what other differences are present: Is this underlined word necessary to tell us who/what we're talking about? Are there commas? -Once clarity is established, T defines the two as defining and non-defining. PRONUNCIATION (4 MINS) -Each phrase is brought up separately with its phonemic spelling. -T reads the phrases 3-4 times each, eliciting syllable count, stress, intonation, and linking. -T drills SS after each phrase before moving onto the next. APPROPRIACY -Not addressed as this is grammar and is neutral.
-T gives demos task for SS. SS will have two sentences and must create one sentence using non-defining relative clauses. -SS work individually, then check in pairs. -T checks if SS have any questions before moving on.
-SS give one-word answers to the statements provided. "A country you'd like to visit. Italy" -SS send answers in direct chat to their partners then take turns asking questions about the answers. SS must use relative clauses in their answers. -T demos before sending them off.
-SS share something they had in common with their partner or something interesting that they heard. -DEC on Whiteboard
