TP 8 - Grammar
Pre-Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about the difference between present simple and present continuous forms through guided discovery based on a text about what Imogen does on her day off work. The lesson starts with a discussion in pairs about how they spend their days off work for national holidays (Mexican Independence day). This is followed by a highlighting task where students read a text for general understanding and then categorize examples of the present continuous & present simple forms on wordwall. Next, students will receive MFP clarification of the contrast between the two forms with a google form activity. Finally, students will pick the best tense in a gap fill exercise for controlled practice of the target language before participating in some freer practice where they will role play a day off for Dia de los Muertos in a paired speaking activity.

Materials

Abc M(A)FP

Abc Highlighting

Main Aims

  • To contrast simple present and present continuous forms in the context of how people spend their days-off.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in the target language through a role play in the context of spending the day off for Dia de los Muertos.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show Ss photos from a national Mexican holiday (Independence day) & have them discuss in pairs/groups in BORs for 3-4 minutes. Ask: Do you work on this day? If not, how do you spend your day off? CCQ: day off = day not at work. ICQ: what do you do? (discuss how they spend day off) pairs or individual? (pairs) how long? (3-4 mins). OCFB (~1 min)

Highlighting (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for, and draw students attention to, the target language through a text

Intensive: Ss read the text and in pairs in BORs they will match/categorize sentences that use the present continuous form and the present simple form to talk about Imogen’s activities on wordwall. Before they read, I will remind them the text is about how Imogen is spending her day off for a national holiday (relaxing). They will have 5-6 minutes. I will demo the first one. ICQ: what do you do? (read text & match/categorize sentences that talk about her activities) Individual or in pairs? (pairs) How long? (5-6 mins). OCFB (~2 min) Answers: continuous form – Is spending, aren’t doing, they’re… sitting, she’s…doing, she’s finding; simple form – go away, meet friends, Imogen likes, doesn’t want, she wants

Clarification (12-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ss will then use bolded words in marker sentences from the text to answer M(A)FP questions on google forms in pairs in BORs for ~5-6 minutes. ICQ: what do you do? (answer the questions) In pairs? (yes) How long? (5-6 mins). OCFB & drill (~5 mis) CCQ: doing a course = taking/enrolled in a course A. Imogen is spending her day off with her husband, Alex. B. Imogen and Alex usually go away at the weekend. C. She’s also doing a course in fashion design. - Q’s: A. What tense do we use for things happening at this moment (right now)? (present continuous) B. What tense do we use for things that are generally or always true? (present simple). C. What tense do we use for things happening in the present time period, but maybe not at this exact moment? (present continuous); Are these tenses formal, informal, or neutral? (neutral); What is the correct form for present simple? (subject + (do/does) + verb + rest of sentence) How do you make this into a question form? (Do/does + subject + verb + rest of sentence?) What is the correct form for present continuous? (subject + am/is/are + verb ending in -ing + rest of sentence) How do you make this sentence negative? (add not between is/am/are & verb); A. What is the correct sentence stress? (content words: Imogen spending day-off husband Alex) C. What is the correct sentence stress? (She’s also doing course in fashion design) - CCQs for OCFB: Is she spending the day with Alex at this moment, right now? (yes); Do Imogen and Alex go away on weekends a lot? (yes) How do we know? (usually); Is she taking a fashion course this week/month? (yes) Is Imogen doing the course in this exact moment, right now? (no) What is she doing right now? (spending time with Alex); What if only Imogen went away, does that change the verb form? (go becomes goes); Is question form the same for present continuous? (yes, switch the order of subject & am/is/are) Certain verbs don’t fit this form (like, believe)

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss will work individually to complete a gap fill activity on wordwall (~3-4 mins), filling in the blanks with either the present simple or present continuous. Then they will compare answers via chat before OCFB (~2 mins). Encourage Ss it’s okay if they don’t know every word, try to use context clues. ICQ: what do you do? (fill in the gaps) In pairs? (no) How long? (3-4 mins). CCQ: wedding anniversary = date/day you got married; motorbikes = moto/motocicleta in Spanish - Qs: Carlos 1_____ (spend) his day off with his family. His family 2_____ (live) quite far away, so he 3_____ (not see) them very often. But today is a special day: his parents 4______ (celebrate) their wedding anniversary. Carlos 5_____ (spend) most of his free time working on his motorbike. He 6_____ (not like) his job at Glitz very much, so he 7_____ (look) for another job. He 8_____ (want) to take photos of motorbikes instead of fashion models! - Answers: 1. Is spending 2. Live/lives 3. Doesn’t see 4. Are celebrating 5. Spends 6. Doesn’t like 7. Is looking 8. Wants

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss will role play in pairs in BORs for ~7-8 minutes how they spend their day/s off for Día de los Muertos by pretending today is Nov 1st/2nd. Encourage students to use the TL. This will be followed by OCFB & DEC on jamboard (~2-3 mins) ICQ: what do you do? (talk about how you spend dia de los Muertos) In pairs? (yes) How long? (7-8 mins) Talk about what you do on your day off. Be sure to include: o A tradition you do every year (ex: I/we usually make/do/go to…) o What you are doing right now (ex: I am preparing for Dia de los Muertos by…/I am making…)
