LP -4 Lesson Plan (films/ Grammar/ Simple past & Present Perfect)

Description

In this lesson students learn about present perfect and simple past through guided discovery based on various grammar activities about the film. The task starts with a discussion about film. This is followed by two activities on simple past and present perfect and irregular verbs. Finally there is some controlled practice of grammar on a reading text.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Link to the previous lesson and see what sts can remember about Todd. - Who is Todd philips? - What is he famous for? - When did he start going to the movie? How old was he? - What is he doing now?

Activity-1 (Exposure) (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the main grammar through 2 examples

1- I am going to write down on the WB 2 sentences, and elicit from the sts what tenses they are. 2- Then I will write next to each one sentence: present perfect, and to another: simple past. 3- I am going to give them HO of other examples to see whether they got the idea or not (simple past when we say exactly when it happened vs present perfect)>

Activity-2 (find examples from text) (2-4 minutes) • Give them free practice on the text to know whether they understood the TL grammar or not.

1- I am going to ask them to scan the text and find four examples of present perfect and four examples of simple past. 2- Then I am going to put them in pairs, and ask them to check their answers. 3- Next I will ask the WC, when did the past simple examples happen? The one who answers should raise his/her hand first and then answer. 4- CCQs on Meaning: What is the difference between simple past and present perfect? Do we know time in present perfect? No. Do we know the time in past simple? Yes.

Activity-3 (irregular verb forms) (List) (8-10 minutes) • To make them write the past simple and past participle forms the irregular verbs

1- Here you have some verbs in its present form, Please write the past and past participle forms of these verbs or 2nd and 3rd forms of the verbs. 2- I am going to give you an example on the WB: Look at the WB please: go - went - gone. 3- Now in pairs of two, two, two, check your answers. (2 minutes) 4- Now here is a list of irregular verbs, check your answers here. (2 minutes) 5- Let's check the answers. 6- How do we pronounce 'present perfect' & simple past? /'prizint 'p3rfikt/ /'simpel 'paest/

WB Activity-4 (Form) (8-10 minutes) • To highlight the form of present perfect tense with examples

1- I am going to write on the WB: I have studied English. He has played tennis. I will elicit the form form the sts. 2- I am going to write on the top of the WB: i/you/we/they he/she/it will ask them: Who can give me some examples of present perfect for group 1? & write it on the WB. Now, Who can change this sentence for the 2nd group? (2-3 examples will be enough).

Activity -5 (Gap-fill) (8-10 minutes) • To concept check about TL grammar and prepare them for writing & further speaking in the next lesson

1- I am going to give the sts instruction and say: - I am going to give you a paper, it is about the actor, Ewan McGregor. do you see it? - you just read it and put the verbs in brackets in the correct form of the present perfect or simple past. - Do you know what to do? Do you put the verb in ing form? in the past form? just i the past? No, in the past or present perfect. 2- Now we will check the answers. 3- FB: I am going to ask them: Why did you choose the first one? the second one?...etc
