TP 8 - Grammar: Present Simple
Elementary level

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the present simple tense in the context of routines

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of days of week in the context of routines

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In the warmer, I will go over the words covered during TP6. This is to link the routine lessons together and provide some coverage for those students who were not present before. T will share screen and open TP 6 Routines Jamboard to Slide 3. T will elicit from students the meaning of the words by dragging the pictures to the words.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T will share screen and will share TP 8 Routines 2 Jamboard. The first slide has a weekly planner. T will ask Ss "What is on this slide?" "Weekly planner" T will ask Ss "What are these (and highlight the days of the week)?" "The days of the week" T will ask Ss to say the days of the week and listen for mispronunciation. T will drill with Ss to improve pronunciation as needed. Then T will share slide 2. On this slide are verbs in the Present Simple. T will ask Ss what the TL means and drag meanings to words and pictures. Then T will elicit form elements from Ss dragging post-it notes to the words. Then T will share slide 3 and ask "What tense are the verbs in?" "Present simple" T will drill sentences with Ss getting them to say the sentences. T will drill pronunciation with Ss.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T will share link to Google Jamboard and ask Ss to go to Slide 4. T will show slide 4 on screen and ask "Do you see this?" "Yes" Ss will read the example provided of the TL individually for 3 minutes. T will then check with Ss for gist. "Does Steve sleep in on Saturday?" "Yes" "Does Steve clean his apartment on Saturday or Sunday?" "Saturday"

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T will share link to TP 8 - Controlled Practice Google Form and instruct Ss to go to link. Then T will share screen of Controlled Practice sheet and ask Ss if they see this. Ss will work in pairs to answer the questions for 5 mins. T will check with students: "Do you work in pairs or individually?" "Pairs" "How long?" "5 minutes" Ss will return to main room and T will elicit answers from Ss in OCFB

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T will then share link for TP 8 - Free Practice Google Form. Ss will work in pairs and ask each other the questions. T will place Ss in BOR with same partners as before. Ss will have 5 minutes to complete task. Then Ss will return to main room. T will ask Ss the questions from the practice in OCFB.

Delayed Feedback (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with constructive feedback to improve use of target language.

T will provide feedback of mistakes noticed during the lesson.
