Description

In this lesson, students will practise the use of for and since based on a reading text about different types of offices and their working environment. The stages for this lesson will be the following: Lead in-setting a question to elicit Ss prior knowledge related to the topic. After, there will be a reading for gist activity followed by a reading for detail one. Once the context is set, MFP will be covered with the aid of CCQs. The next stages will allow Ss to practice in a controlled task to allow them in a second activity to interact in a freer practice. For each stage there will be a open class feedback and in some, peer/group colaboration so as to stablish a range of interactions within the class.

Main Aims

  • To provide review of the use of for and since in the context of jobs and types of offices.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed practice using facts related to open plan offices.
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a in a conversation about life experiencies in the context of jobs and offices.

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T - S (Open Class Discussion) T shows a slide with a main situation and 2 questions: Imagine you are the boss in a company... 1. How would you organize your employees? 2. Would you use open-plan offices or private offices? Why? T nominates 3 students to share their answers for Open Class Discussion.

Exposure/Reading for gist (4-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T-S T asks Ss to go to a Google Forms link shared through the chat box. T instructs Ss to quickly read the text and answer the questions below it. T will check Ss' understanding of the task by using ICQs: 1. Do you have to read the text in detail? No 2. Do you have to create a tittle for the text or to select the best option? 3. Do you have a specific time to do the activity? Yes, 3 minutes. S (Individually) Ss answer the questions individually. OCFB Ss share their options and compare them with the rest of the group and the teacher to check the correct answers.

Clarification/MFP (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T-S & PW T shows key vocabulary (since last year, for eleven months, since last May, since 2001, for twelve years) with the instructions to follow. T uses CCQs and guided discovery for meaning and form, then pronunciation. T - S T allots a couple of minutes to let Ss discover the use of for and since on a Google Jamboard with their names. The first one is done as an example together. S Ss look for their name on the slides to complete the rules on their own before checking as a OCFB. Teacher asks CCQs if necessary to check meaning. MEANING I haven’t been able to work properly since last year. 1. When did the person stopped being able to work properly? 2. Is the person having problems to work properly now? 3. Is it referring to an specific time or a period of time? I have worked at this company for eleven months. 1. When did the man start working in this company? 2. Does he work in this company now? 3. Is he referring to an specific time or a period of time? I have had my own office since last May 1. When did the person started to have his own office? 2. Does he have his own office now? 3. Is he referring to an specific time or a period of time? I have been a journalist since 2001 1. When did the person started to be a journalist? 2. Is he a journalist now? 3. Is he referring to an specific time or a period of time? I have had my own office for twelve years. 1. When did the person started to have his own office? 2. Does he have his own office now? 3. Is he referring to an specific time or a period of time? FORM 1. What tense is the verb in the sentences? 2. Is for at the beginning in the middle or at the end of the sentence? What about since? PRONUNCIATION T will ask students for the correct pronunciation of each of the words learned during the meaning and form practice while using Canva to project the sentences. Ss practice the correct pronunciation of each word after T models it T makes emphasis on connected speech when reading the examples used for the Meaning Activity Ss will repeat the examples and practice the connected speech as part of choral drill

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T-S (Instructions) T asks Ss to go to a Google Forms link and individually fill in the gaps by using for and since to complete each one of the 5 sentences. T allots 6 minutes T will check Ss' understanding of the task by asking some ICQs: * Will you do the activity in pairs or individually? Individually * Do you have 4 minutes to do the activity? No, 6 minutes PW T will instruct Ss to check answers in pairs (break out rooms) for 2 minutes. OCFD (Open Class Feedback Discussion) T will nominate students to share their answers. T will ask Ss if they agree or disagree with those given sentences. Ss can verbally peer evaluate or comment on answers.

Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss-Ss (Peer to peer discussion in break-out rooms) or PW T gives some prompts for Ss to make a small conversation. T allots Ss 5 minutes to work in small groups. T asks Ss to share their conversations with the class. Item zero: not swum in a lagoon / since A: I haven't swum in a lagoon since August. B: Why is that? C: Because I haven't had time. Prompts: 1. studied English / since 2. waited / for 3. not slept / since 4. started doing exercise / for 5. not travelled / since 6. gone to the cinema / for

DEC (4-5 minutes) • To make students aware of mistakes

T-S & OCFD (Open Class Feedback Discussion) T will use the board on zoom to type some sentences that were mentioned during the class by Ss to review grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation. Ss will be encouraged to express their comments and opinions about those sentences and say if they're correct or which corrections should be done.
