Main Aims

  • To enable students to understand and practice using possessive pronouns in the context of talking about people's belongings

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable students to practice their listening skills by listening to an audio with possessive pronouns and to practice their fluency skills by discussing people's belongings

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Share screen and ask Ss lead-in question: do you ever borrow anything from your family? Before nominating Ss to respond, give example: I borrow my sister's shoes all the time. I think hers are cuter than mine and we have the same size feet. Nominate 2 Ss to respond

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Instruct students to listen to a text and think about two (gist) questions: What do I (the speaker) want to bring to the beach? What do you like to bring to the beach? After listening, nominate 2 Ss to respond. Then tell Ss to listen to it again and this time, fill in the blanks from the Google Slide. Read again if necessary. Nominate Ss to share answers and ask what these words are examples of (possessive pronouns).

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Instruct Ss that we’re going to do a worksheet about possessive pronouns. Share Google form in chat box after instructing Have them work individually for 2 minutes and then go over the answers as a group, annotating the answers onto the screen while nominating Ss to respond. Use these questions as CCQ’s to ensure Ss understand MFP of the TL

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Instruct students to work individually on a worksheet for further practice. Share Google Form in chat box and give them 2-3 minutes on their own and then send them to BOR to discuss their answers with a partner. Monitor all BOR to see if Ss have any confusion about the questions or things to address in OCFB After returning from BOR, share the answer key on the screen and ask if there are any questions

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Show Ss pictures of 4 people (in Google Slides) and ask them what items they think belong to each of them? Nominate 2 Ss to respond. Show them pictures of other items (may be similar to what Ss said) and instruct students to think about which item belongs to each person in the pictures using possessive pronouns. GIve Ss 1-2 min to think to themselves and take notes and then send Ss to BOR to discuss in pairs.
