Description

In this lesson, students learn to talk about the different types of story in English language. They first complete a test to check their background knowledge of the different types of stories. After which they will be taught and then a second test to check their knowledge and a freer practise to get them talk about the different types of story.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of story types in the context of their favorite story type or movie type.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of describing their favorite story type or movie type.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Project pictures of different types of stories and ask the students to identify the stories. -Demonstrate two stories with them. -Put them in breakout rooms to check their answers -Project the answer key and ask them to check their answers.

Test #1 (6-8 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

-Pre-teach certain vocabulary they will need for the test 1. -Give the students to match given expressions with the stories they describe. -demonstrate by eliciting the answer to the first two questions. -Give them one minute to complete the questions. -Put them in breakout rooms to discuss their answers. -Ask them to write their answers in the chat box so as to identify their need areas so as to focus on them at the teach stage. -Project the answer key and ask them to check their answers. -Monitor to identify the areas they need help with.

Teach (8-10 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage.

- Elicit to clarify the different types of stories as contained in the lexis sheet using context and CCQs. - Drill the correct pronunciation of the words. - Write on the board to highlight the form of the words.

Test #2 (6-8 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test.

-Project a second test and ask the students to complete the sentences. -Demonstrate the task by eliciting the answer to the first and second questions. -Put the students in breakout rooms to work together in completing the test. -After the breakout rooms, project the answer key and ask the students which questions were more difficult to find out.

Free practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with freer practice of the vocabulary learnt.

-Project the different categories of stories and ask the students the types they love to read or watch. -Give them interview questions to use to find out why their partner loves that category of story or movie most. -Demonstrate this activity by letting one of the students ask me and letting a student ask another before sending them to the breakout rooms. -Put them in breakout rooms to interview one another using given interview questions. Content Feedback: -Ask representatives from each of the breakout rooms to answer: -Which genre or genres is the most read in your room? -Which genre is the least read in your group? Why Language Feedback: -Write down some good use of the language by the students in the breakout rooms and praise them. -Write down some of the wrong use of the target language on the board and elicit their correct use from the students.
