Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan, detailed and inference reading practice using a text about chapter 1, in the context of David's early life.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a dialogue, in the context of David's early life/days.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. In pairs, discuss the definition of a happy life. 2. Share your answers with me.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Before reading, I will pre-teach the blocking vocabulary that the students might not know. I will provide MPF (meaning, pronunciation, and form) for each word. 1. Meaning: eliciting the meaning by asking questions and asking CCQs. 2. Pronunciation: IPA and Chorally drilling. 3. Mentioning the type of the word and drawing attention to the form.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (20 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

While reading, I will engage the students with activities and tasks that will provide gist, reading for specific details and information, analyzing, and inference. There were two visitors to the house in Blunderstone. 1. Who were they? 2. What did they look like?

Post-Reading/Listening (10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Post Reading: 1. Reading popcorn 2. Highlighting the dialogues 3. Role-playing. 4. Provide feedback on accuracy and fluency.

Homework (10 minutes) • To Provide extended reading for gist and details.

1. How did David feel about his mother and Miss Peggotty? 2. Did he have the same feeling towards Mr. Edward Murdstone? Why?
