Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows a picture of a haunted house. Ask the ss: What’s this? Is it a happy house? Do you see houses like this in films? Do you think ghosts live here? (show a picture of a ghost). Is it scary? Mime scared. Tell the ss: We call this a haunted house.

Pre-Reading (8-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

introduce the new vocabulary like A ghost, a pub, (if the ss don’t understand, tell them it’s the same as a bar) a priest, spooky (same as haunted), a church, a cemetery (find a photo of an Egyptian cemetery) a journalist, (find a photo of a famous Egyptian journalist. Ask: What’s his/her job?). All of these words can be taught through pictures. Just ask: What’s this? 10 minutes Go to Exercise 1a. Demo with the ss by asking about the first two prepositions. Where’s the ghost? Ss answer: It’s next to the ….., under, etc. Let them finish the rest in the breakout rooms. About 2/3 minutes. When they have finished, provide an answer key. Please do not ask the ss one by one. Let the ss check for themselves silently. Exercise 1b. Demo the speaking part with the ss: Where’s the ghost? Drill using the correct rise-fall intonation. Ss: it’s next to the.. It’s under the…. T-ss, ss-ss in open pairs in the main session room. Make sure that every ss gets the chance to ask the question.

While-Reading #1 (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ask the gist question: Is the hotel old or new? They have 1 minute. ICQ: Are you going to read quickly or slowly? Ss read and tell the answer.

While-Reading#2 (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Ss read and answer the questions in Exercise 2a. Demonstrate the first one with the ss and let them tell you the answer. Now tell them they have 3 minutes to read the text and write short answers. ICQs: Are you going to read quickly or slowly? Are you going to write long answers? (No), Ss read and answer the questions. When they have finished, put them in the breakout rooms to check their answer together. Provide the answer key with short answers. Let the ss check. When they have finished, ask them: Was it easy or difficult? Exercise 2d Ss try to correct the information from memory. Demonstrate Number with the ss. Now let them work in pairs/groups in the breakout rooms. Provide the answer key.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned.

Exercise 2e. Have these questions on your PPT/Shared Whiteboard. Do you think Stephen saw the ghost? Do you believe in ghosts? Would you like to spend the night in Room 11 of Gosforth Hall hotel? Why? /Why not? Ss ask each other in the breakout rooms.
