In this lesson, the students will be introduced to basic rules of the APA style and the tools they can use to help them practice writing in APA style.

Main Aims

  • To provide process writing practice of a research paper using the APA style, in the context of research/academic paper.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide process writing practice of a research/academic paper.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. I will show the students two papers. One is academic in APA style and the other is not. 2. The students will take few minutes to look at/discuss the differences between the two papers. 3. After they finish they will share what they noticed with me. 4. I will give them feedback.

Exposure (10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

1. In this stage, I will show the students a few examples of academic research papers in the APA format. 2. At this stage I will encourage the students to ask questions and I will reformulate their questions to make them better understand the basic rules of the APA style.

Useful Language (5 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

At this stage, I will briefly explain any abbreviated terms or academic words.

Productive Task(s) (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

1. The students will take one more look at some of the examples I provided earlier. 2. They will begin to write (using their laptops) the title page of a topic they choose in the APA style. 3. I will provide immediate correction and technical support.

Feedback and Error Correction (5-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

1. At this stage I will give the students overall feedback on the errors they made. 2. I will also give them a chance to ask questions and take notes.
