Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about Birthday's in the context of family

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice pronunciation of the word present in the context of birthday

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask my students the following question. Do you like birthday presents?

Pre-Reading/Listening (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make them understand the pronunciation of birthday & present

I will inform the Ss what i received for my last birthday Form I will ask the Ss the form of the word present in the context of birthday Pronunciation 1. I will model the word present 2. Ask Ss to identify number of syllables 3. practise pronouncing the word "present" with Ss and correct stress Repeat the same stages for Birthday

While Listening CD1>63 (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ask the students the following questions after they listen to the audio. 1. What is the topic of the audio file? I will ask the Ss in an open class I will provide feedback and correct any errors

While-Reading/Listening #2 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ask the students the following questions after they listen to the audio. 1. Does Louise have a present for Sophie? Yes/No 2. Did Louise want to buy Sophie for her birthday? Book/DVD Separate students into breakout rooms in pairs. Then Self correct in an open class I will provide feedback and correct any errors

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will ask the Ss the following 2 questions and separate them into breakout rooms in pairs. What did you get for your birthday? Do you like your present? Ss will inform me in the breakout rooms prior to returning to the main room and receiving group feedback. I will cover any DEC and common faults i have observed within the lesson
