Main Aims

  • Build oral comprehension skills.
  • Introduce and expose students to the /b/ and /k/ sounds represented by b and c.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show Ss the cover of the Bears and Beans. Have Ss share their knowledge of bears: what they look like, where they live, what they eat... Ask what would bears do with beans.

While-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ss take turns reading Bears and Beans. (T notes any troublesome words to go over after the Ss finish reading.) Pause occasionally to ask Ss to predict what might happen next and ask to clarify comprehension.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Have Ss explain whether the book is fiction or nonfiction. Invite them to summarize the story For comprehension ask: Who were the main characters? Where did the story take place?/What was the setting? What happened first? Next? Last?

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Show Ss the cover of Crazy Cat. Ask Ss if they have seen cats acting crazy and ask them to explain their experiences with cats.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ss take turns reading Crazy Cat. Occasionally ask Ss to predict what might happen next and ask comprehension questions.

Post-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned.

Have Ss explain whether the book is fiction or nonfiction. Invite them to summarize the story. Ask: Who were the main characters? What happened first? Next? Last? Why is Crazy Cat a good title for this story?
