Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, Ss will have developed the listening subskills of gist and detail in the context of favorite objects.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide speaking fluency practice and understand some key vocabulary items.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teach 'favourite' by saying My favourite actor is Elizabeth Moss (Cuenta de la Criada/Handmaid's Tale), My favourite color is red. What about you? Then focus students on the photos. Ask them to predict these people's favourite things: Kemal; Lisa; Tim; Mo.

Pre-Reading/Listening (7-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

M&F - Screen share slide and demonstrate how to match words to pictures to definitions. While-Reading/Listening #1 (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Show task in screenshare. Share G-Form in chat. Play audio once. Tell Ss to submit answers. Get Ss to compare answers in pairs in BORs. Check answers OC: 1. What is German? The car 2. What has got a great CD player? The car 3. Who is black and white? The cat 4. Who is not very friendly? The cat 5. Who has got three trumpets? Tim 6. What has got good games? The laptop 7. What is orange? The laptop

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

1. Instructions: tell your partner about each person's favourite thing. Assign Ss A/B. Student A: Kemal/ Tim; Student B: Lisa / Mo Put Ss in BORs, monitor and check Ss are on task. Provide audio script in case Ss dry up or have problems. (If time in OC, get Ss to look at Kemal and Lisa's sections. Together on WB, change full forms to contractions, e.g., It is a German car - It's a German car. Drill chorally. 2. Instructions: show final slide. Give an example. My favourite thing is a pair of sunglasses. They're old. They're useful to me. They have a case. Give Ss a slide each. Let them write for 3-4 mins. Have them shares in pairs or threes in BORs. OCFB and DEC. Focus on relevant vocab and verb form: My favourite thing is .... It's / They're ... It's / They're ... It's got / They've got
