Show the cut- ups,ask them to match the cut up phrases in ex 2a. First check in pairs and then have a look at the answer key that is at the back of their chairs. In groups, they categorise (stick) expressions according to meaning (introduce your own opinion, report someone else's, say you are not sure) .Hand out A3 worksheet and strips. Check the answers and drill some phrases. (if you ask me, to be honest)
Write a sentence on the board "Children must not be allowed to use internet." Ask who thinks that it is right or not. Elicit from Ss the phrases with "agree" . Write some of the phrases on the board and draw a scale. Hand out each pair strips with phrases and ask them to match the phrases to the scale. Check answers and drill some of them ( I completely agree, I don't really agree, I agree in some ways but...)
Ask questions-1) How did people use to get information? Where do you get information from now? Look at ex 1 ( Global Up Int) individually and decide how much they agree with each statement. Then individually, think of examples to support their ideas. make notes. Think of examples they can ask their partners in discussion. Write the questions. Elicit some questions like" Why do you think that? What makes you say that? and write them on the board.
In groups, Ss discuss the statements. Remind them to use the opinion and agreeing phrases and ask each other questions to get more information. Monitor but don't interfere. While monitoring make notes if they have any errors in using those phrases. As a conclusion of this activity, each group will express their final decision what they agree with or not and why with one statement using one of the agreeing or opinion phrases.
