Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To increase classroom interaction through groupwork and games.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1- The teacher will show a spinning wheel containing questions. She will choose a student to play. The T spins the wheel and when the student says " stop", the teacher stops. The student will answer the question. This game is for reviewing adjectives ( 5 minutes) The teacher will show a picture of a family. Then, she will ask students some questions to elicit the comparative adjectives. For example, she will ask: 1-Do these people know each other ? 2-Which one is the grandfather? 3-How do you know? 4-What about the father? Is he old too? 5-Who's older? 6-Who's taller, the grandmother or the father? , etc.

Exposure (5-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

1- The teacher will introduce students to a text that has the target language. Ss will work in groups to read the text and answer the questions. 1- How old is Mohamed? 2- Who is older than Mohamed? 3- Why does the rabbit always win the race?

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher will use the answers as marker sentences to clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language. First, the teacher will ask CCQs to check the meaning : 1- Are Hala and Mohamed the same age or different? Different So, to say the difference between two people/things is to compare Then, the teacher moves to form and pronunciation. she will ask: 1- Is old an adjective/noun? adjective. 2- What comes after " old"? " er" and " than" 3- What comes after " fast"? "er" and " than" Finally, the teacher drills parts of the sentences to practise pronunciation.

Highlighting (10-15 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The teacher will show some pictures on the board with adjectives. Students will change the adjectives into comparative ones. The teacher will highlight the use of "er" and " than". Then the teacher will introduce different forms of adjectives and how to change them into comparative ones. For example: If an adj. ends in "y", we cross the " y" and add " ier", if an adjective ends with vowel+consonant, we double the last letter, --etc.

"Run and touch the right answer" ( Fully Controlled Practice) (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The teacher will divide students into two teams. She will show questions on comparative adjectives on the board. A student from each team will come forward. The teacher will show a question and students will have to run and touch the right comparative adjective. The student who touches the right answer first gets a point for his/her team. The team with the most points wins the game.

Semi-Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Game: The teacher will divide students into 3 groups. The teacher will prepare 24 cards. Each card has a picture of two animals/people/things. She will put all cards face down on the table. A student from each group will come forward. He/she will pick a card. The teacher will allocate time ( 1 minute) for each student to come up with a sentence using a comparative adjective on the picture. The student who does so keeps the card. Finally, the team with the biggest n. of cards wins.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The teacher will divide students into groups. Each group will get a picture. Students in each group will have to write down 3 sentences on the picture using comparative adjectives.
