Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed in the context of remote working

  • To provide clarification of vocabulary related to accommodation and travel that might be useful to Ss
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of alternative lifestyles

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Focus Ss attention on the slide 1. Ask: What is an unusual achievement? (Answer: Is a not very common accomplishment, victory, or conquest) Ask CCQ: Do you know sb that have achieved sth unusual? (Answer: nominate 2 Ss to elicit some suggestions) Ask CCQ: How many types of achievements do you know? (Answer: work related awards, volunteer related awards, scholarships, qualifications)

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Work on meaning of challenging words: praise, juggler, prodigy. Google slide: nominates SS to match words to photos and definition using arrows. Praise /prāz/ Ask CCQ: Have you ever been full of praise of your favorite soccer team? (Answer: Yes, when they win a difficult soccer match) Ask CCQ: Have you ever been full of praise of your favorite artist? (Answer: Yes, when he/she win a career recognition or award) FCQ: Can it be a verb as well as a noun? Yes: To praise. We can't praise Michael Jackson enough—he won 18 Grammys Prodigy /ˈprädəjē/ Ask CCQ: What makes a person to be a prodigy? (Answer: Their exceptional qualities or abilities. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is the child prodigy par excellence) FCQ: Can we use prodigy in the same way in plural? No, for plural we say prodigies and prodigy in singular. Juggler /ˈjəɡ(ə)lər/ Ask CCQ: What objects can tosse a juggler? (Answer: Balls, bean bags, rings, or clubs) FCQ: Can it be a verb as well as a noun? Yes: To juggle. .The clown juggled five balls with his hands.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Share Google Forms task #1 on the chatbox. Ss have 3 min to read quickly and choose the best title for each of the 5 sections of the article “unusual achievement”. Ss compare answers in pairs in BORS before OCFB. Title for picture 1. Prestigious business award for Fabiola. Title for picture 2. Prodigies graduate. Title for picture 3. Juggler breaks world record Title for picture 4. Supergran safely home. Title for picture 5. Another first for Halle.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (18-20 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ss will be reading individually for detailed understanding. You have 7 minutes. Encourage Ss to read and understand the main ideas and ignore words they don't know that aren't relevant. But you can use a dictionary to check one or two unknown words (point out link to Cambridge dictionary online link in Google form). For the first 2 texts, Ss will answer open questions, screenshare Google Form Task #2. Tell Ss the answers are not always fully stated in text, they may have to read 'between the lines' (e.g., #3). You have 3 minutes. ICQs: How long, in pairs or individually? #1. Is the success of Fabiola to keep working with 13 employees? Why? (Line 15) Answer: She took the organization from a tiny operation employing just 13 people. #2. Is being a celebrity in European business circles what empowered Fabiola to become the Most influential Businesswomen? (Line 16) Answer: No, what made her to be recognized were the results of Yahoo becoming a worldwide company with a turnover of more than $100 million #3. How many siblings does Noraisha have? (Line 21) Answer: She has 2 sisters and 1 brother. (Sufiah, the older that studied in Oxford, the younger Zuleikha and Iskander who recently graduated) #4. Is Noraisha the younger sister in her family? (Line 23) Answer: No, she is right in the middle. The youngest is Zuleihka and the older is Sufiah. Give Ss 2 mins to compare answers in BORs before OCFB. For texts 3-5, Ss will answer T/F statements on Google Forms Task #3. You have 3 minutes. #1. Is the Brazilian Ricardinho Neves the new world record of ball control with 7h 5min 25s? (Line 3) Answer: No, his new record is 19h, 15min and 31s #2. Did Jennifer Murray win one million euros for her world record? (Line 12) Answer: False. He raised one million euros for a charity association that provides facial surgery to children in developing countries. #3. Were their multiple recognitions in the list of the fifty most beautiful people in the world what helped her to win an Oscar? (Line 12) Answer: No, what it really helped her were her acting skills. Give Ss 2 mins to compare answers in BORs before OCFB.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Tell Ss they will be giving a short talk about “a goal that they want to achieve” in the future. You have one minute to make notes in response to the questions. When one minute is up, say: you will be speaking for one-two minutes so your partner should time you. When max two minutes is ended, ask the speaker a question. Put Ss in BORs for 5 minutes. Monitor and write examples of good language or errors on post its on a Jamboard. FB on their ideas, ask if there were any similarities or differences. DEC in OC. Describe a goal that you want to achieve in the future. #1. What kind of training or qualifications do you need to achieve it? #2. Can you practice or become qualificative to you goal in your city? Or do you need to travel to another city? #3. How many time per day/week do you spend to your goal? #4. Is money an issue to achieve your goal?
