Procedure (48-64 minutes)
Brainstorm technology in our lives. Write up suggestions and clarify vocabulary where necessary.
Listen to conversation about technology. Which of the speakers has a negative view, which positive. Which one do they agree with?
Display sentence from the dialogue, contrasting now + present simple with used to. Students identify which parts of the sentence refer to the present, and which to the past.
Present used to/didn't used to. Highlight base form of main verb. Model correct pronunciation, highlighting /t/ at the end of used. Drill correct pronunciation, focusing on word stress and connected speech.
Gap fill - play conversation again. Students complete gap-fill sentences with the target grammar in the correct forms, then complete gapped sentences with the correct form of the verb in brackets.
As a group, compile a list on the board of ways that technology today makes our lives easier. Then, choosing one or two of the items, elicit what people did in the past. In pairs, learners talk about how life was different in the past, using used to/didn't used to. Circulate and monitor discussions.
Students write a paragraph about ways their lives have changed as a result of technology.
Students think of one thing they found easy, and one they found difficult.
