I will have posted on the WB, pictures of Zodiac signs w/o the names. I will elicit the TL and topic of Lesson. "What is this?" "Have you seen it before?" Ans. will be either zodiac, horoscope, or star sign. I will then give sts a piece of paper with the English name of the zodiac sign on it, and its star dates; Aries - Mar 21-Apr 20. Sts will come to the WB, stick their signs in the correct place. We'll check/correct ans. through FB & ask some sts what their star signs are.
Students will work in groups and ask each other whether they read their horoscope, and if they believe what it says. I will monitor Qs and responses and corrections in their pronunciation as needed. Instructions - "Working pairs and ask your partner if they read their horoscope and if they believe what it says." ICQ 1. Are you working alone? 2. Are you working with a partner?
To elicit the terms "waste of time" and "secret police", I'll first draw a clock on the board and elicit the word time from the students. CCQ "What do we say if a person doesn't use his time properly?" Ans. "He wasted his time" I will write the word "secret" on the board and ask them if they know what it means, answer should be yes. CCQ "What do we call those people who can put you in jail?" Ans. police. "Who are the secret police?" "Do we know them?" "Do they wear a uniform or regular clothes?" I'll tell them these are two words we'll see in the article.
I'll point out to the students that they will see the words Star-sign/zodiac/horoscope throughout the article but they refer to the same thing. I would do this by drawing a triangle on the board and labeling each side. Instructions "We're going to read an article. "Read the article quickly. Choose the best answer." ICQs "What are we going to do?" Read the article. "What are you looking for?" The best title for the article. "Are we writing anything?" No. "Are we only reading?" Yes. "Are you reading alone or together?" Alone
As WCFB, we'll take the answer for ex 2 and sts will give brief explanation why this title was appropriate. Ex 3 Instructions "In this article the first letter is missing from each word. Fill in the missing letters. Double check your answers with your partner." "You will have 2 min." CCQ: "What are we going to do?" Answer. Fill in the missing letters "Alone or together?" Alone. "After, we will _________?" Check answers with our partner. "How many minutes do you have?" Two.
Students will divide into pairs, read and complete exercise 4 by filling in the missing words. Instructions "Write the missing words in ex.4 from the article. Check your answers with your partner." CCQ "What will you do?" Write the missing words. "Alone or as a group?" As a group. "After you finish, you will ___________?" Check answers with group.
As a post reading activity we'll play a game called someone who. Students will be given a sheet of paper with at least eight questions and they will have to find someone who from their classmates matches this description. Students will mingle and write down as many names as they can within the time given. Instructions "On this handout, there are questions to ask your classmates." If the classmate's answer is yes, write their name under Name. If not don't write. CCQ "Will you ask your classmates questions?" Yes. "If they answer yes?" Write their name. "If they answer no________?" Don't write their name.
