Students will learn how to use, practice, and revise the third conditional

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the third conditional in the context of experiences

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about regret in the context of missed opportunities
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of experiences

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will ask Ss to answer in the chatbox, "If COVID19 hadn't happened, what would you have done (in 2019-Present)?" Ss will respond in a relaxed manner. T will nominate if Ss don't volunteer information and to ensure every Ss participates.

Highlighting (1 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T will briefly explain the topic of today's lesson: the third conditional. Usage: - express regret about the past - to talk about past situations that did not happen

Text-work (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T will instruct Ss to read to a short text and answer reading comprehension questions on a Google Form. After, T will send Ss to breakout rooms for peer-to-peer feedback, then OFCB.

Language Clarification (6-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

MEANING I will ask Ss some CCQ for Ss to identify Meaning. -If you had studied harder, you would have passed the exam. 1. Is this in the past, present, or future tense? 2. Did you fail the exam? If I hadn't stayed out last night, I wouldn't have woken up late today. 1. Is this in the past, present, or future tense? 2. Did you wake up late? FORM I will go over how to form the Third Conditional and provide more example sentences. If + past perfect, (noun/pronoun) would have + past participle. PRONUNCIATION - Sentence stress I will read the sentences out loud and will ask the Ss to identify which words I am stressing. I will ask Ss to drill. APPROPRIACY T will introduce Ss to different forms in the second clause: would/could/might. T will clarify the difference between Would have - would've - would of - woulda T will ask CCQs to check Ss understanding of each form and when to use it. 1. Which form is incorrect? would of 2. Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T will instruct Ss to practice the third condition using a gap-fill Google Doc T will use the breakout room feature to allow peer-to-peer feedback. T will do OCFB, nominate/elicit answers from Ss, and mark the correct answers.

Free Practice (8-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T will instruct Ss to think, "What if your life was different?" and to share an "alternate version" of themselves with their partner. T will give an example so Ss will understand the task. T will use breakout rooms and monitor Ss's conversations. T will use OCFB.

Feedback & DEC (3-4 minutes) • Provide delayed error correction

T will correct Ss mistakes if needed
