In this lesson students will have the opportunity to improve their reading skill

  • To provide and opportunity for students to develop their reading skills to get gists and specific information

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide an opportunity for students to practice their speaking skill and improve their fluency

Procedure

Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To generate interest and introduce a context for reading

I will show a video clip and I think it is pretty straightforward for students to predict what topic we are going to work on. Then I personalize the topic and after brainstorming, I will give Ss some Qs related to Facebook to work in groups. Then I will get the WC FB.

Pre-Teach Vocabulary (5-5 minutes) • To enable students to understand the text easier

In this stage I have planned to pre-teach 3 words: Obsession, Communication and Privacy. First I show a video clip and try to elicit the 'Obsession' then I ask CCQ's and after drilling chorally and individually I write the word on the board. Next I elicit the part of speech and stress of the word and get the FB by WC and individually. CCQ's : Is obsession useful or harmful (good or bad)? Bad When you have obsession, you think about sth or sb sometimes or all the time? (All the time) Does the man (in the commercial) have obsession with car or shoes? Shoes For the next word I put three pictures on the board and ask Ss to work in pairs and write the word on the board and then I ask CCQ's and then drill it. Next I elicit the part of speech and word stress and have the WC FB. CCQ's : Are the monkeys in the picture speaking? No Are the monkeys in the picture communicating? Yes Is sending a text message a communication? Yes For the 'Privacy' I contextualize it (About my dancing!) and after eliciting I ask CCQ's and then drill it chorally and individually and then write it on the board. CCQ's : When I practice dancing, do people see me? No Do I like to be seen by people when I practice dancing? No Is privacy personal? Yes

Gist Reading (5-5 minutes) • To enable students to get a global understanding of the text

I ask Ss to read the text quickly in 2 minutes do the Ex.1 solo and then have a PW to check their answers. Then I ask ICQ's and after that I give Ss the handouts. When they finish the task I will get the WC FB.

Reading for detail (10-12 minutes) • To enable students to gain a comprehensive understanding of the text

I ask Ss to read the text again but this time carefully and do the Ex.2 in 8 minutes (solo) I ask ICQ's and when they do the Ex. 2 I ask them to have GW and discuss their answers. While they are discussing, I monitor them. If they got the correct answers I will ask them to come to the board and write them, otherwise I will give them the correct answers myself.

Post Reading Task (15-20 minutes) • To give students opportunity to improve their interview skill

I have prepared a PowerPoint file. I show the first slide and they might guess who that person is because he was in the Facebook commercial too. Then I elicit his name (It is in the text). After that I encourage Ss to write some questions to interview M.Z. in PW. (My monitoring in this stage is very important) Then I divide them into 3 groups and one of them would be the M.Z and others interview him/her with their written questions.

Filler (5-5 minutes) • To give students opportunity to experience an interview

In this stage if there is time left, I will ask one of students to sit in front of others and everyone has a chance to ask one question from the interviewee.
