Abc Empower

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, practice and review of present continuous and "going to" in the context of making plans.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of talking about future plans.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask students what plans they have for the future. I will share a personal story of my plans to go to the beach this weekend, then ask for a couple people to share.

Exposure (4-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will ask students what they remember about plans that Marta and Craig have made. I will then play the 3 minute audio as we will be using examples from the audio to explore the grammar topic. By using the audio, this provides familiarity and fluidity from the previous lesson.

Highlighting (3-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Fill in the blank activity to elicit target language, present continuous and "going to". I will then ask if these sentences are talking about the present or future?

Clarification (15-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Let the students know they will answer some questions related to the text. Give present continuous vs. "going to" MFP exercises. Do #1 as a class. Have students complete the rest individually. Have students compare answers in BOR's. Go through MFP together during OCF.

Controlled Practice (10-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Let the students know they will practice these two forms. Give students the Controlled Practice Worksheet. Do the practice questions together. Have students do the rest individually. Have students compare answers in BOR's. Go through answers quickly with the answer keys.

Free Practice (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Have students think about their plans for the future (this week, this weekend, next month, etc.). Ask them to think about what those plans are and who they are with. Put students into BOR's to compare answers. Have students share in OCF. Delayed Error Correction.
