the teacher sets the context by personalizing it. She told a real story, it was about watching a car accident and a young man was lying on the ground and no one tried to help. The teacher will elicit how she felt on seeing the accident and how she felt for the young man.
-The teacher clarifies the meaning of the word "sympathy" first tell them that what she felt towards the young man is called sympathy -Then she asks thems CCQ to convey the meaning along with some pictures Is someone in a bad situation? Do you feel sorry for them? Do show it in the way you behave? - she shows them the definition that she elicited by using CCQ.
the teacher elicits some expressions to show sympathy by using menti.com where students answer the following question: "your friend has just failed his exams, what would you say in this situation" she accepts all correct answers
-The teacher tells students that they will have a listening activity. -He displays a slide with three unrelated mini dialogues about difficult situations that happened to people and asks them to look at the question. - He asks them to complete the missing gaps as they listen. -then puts students in breakout rooms to work in groups to share and check answers with each other - The teacher provides feedback
From the answers to the first activity, the teacher highlights the different expressions (written in a different color) and tells them the function of these expressions is to show sympathy - she then shows them a list of other expressions of expressing sympathy.
-The teacher provides students with prompts (a set of situations and another set of phrases of sympathy). - students work in pairs, they use the phrases to make up dialogues expressing sympathy in different situations. -The teacher provides a link on jam board so students can join and write their responses. - After Students finish the task, the teacher elicits a couple of pairs.to act out the dialogues to their mates.
