To give sts freer speaking practise to help their spoken fluency.
Procedure (31-45 minutes)
Show the sts the picture on pg 48 Pre-Int SB and ask what they see. Ask the students - Would they like to stay there? Elicit reasons.
Ask sts to work in pairs and write minimum 5 things that could go wrong while they are stying in a hotel. e.g. dirty bathroom etc. WC FB, write some of the the sts ideas on the board.
Tell sts they will listen to a radio programme about finding the worst hotel in Brighton. Explain that two reporters went back to the hotel after 1 year. Show them the ex sheet and ask them to fold it in half (demonstrate) for ex 2 only. Tell the sts to listen to the audio and tick the problems that they had. ICQ - What is the programme about? - Will they be ticking for the good areas or the problems? Prepare to re-play if necessary. When finished tell them to check their answers with the person sitting next to you. WCFB - Elicit the answers from the sts and write them on the board.
Tell sts to unfold their papers and point ex 3. Get the attention of all sts. Explain that the events of the audio are mixed up. Tell them to listen the audio again and individually put the events on the right order. ICQ - Are these events in the correct order? - Will you work on your own or with a partner? Be ready to re-play the audio if needed. When finished, tell the sts to check their answers with the person sitting next to them. WC FB.
Get the sts to remember the story. Circle Map about The Cumberland Hotel and Nicky & Gavin's experience. Draw a mini circle on the WB and write The Cumberland Hotel and Nicky & Gavin's experience inside the circle. Around the circle write the words you elicited from the sts such as room, shower, lift, view etc. PW - Tell the sts to try and retell Gavin and Nicky's story. FB
Create groups of 3-4 sts. Tell the sts that 1 or 2 of them will be the managers and the other 2 sts will be the hotel guests. They can decide to be a wonderful or an unfriendly manager/guest. WC FB
