Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Writing is an art and cannot be taught per se because it depends on creativity and there are many schools of thought on how to write a good essay. But we can study models of good academic writing. Today we will study how to write a good paragraph, topic sentences, supporting sentences and concluding sentences. Later we will study different types of essay including how to write one. Read as a whole class: What is a good paragraph? What is a good topic sentence?

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Activity 4: Do Topic sentence and controlling idea practice

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Read as a whole class: What are good supporting sentences? Do Activity 18: Check students understanding of topic sentences, supporting ideas and concluding sentences

Useful Language (15-20 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Vocabulary and Collocations Practice + Noun form Grammar Practice + Read capitalization and comma rules as a whole class and do comma practice

Productive Task(s) (20-25 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Write your own paragraph in describing a particular restaurant.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Peer editing of paragraph in pairs by providing a checklist
