Description

In this lesson , Students will learn how to analyse a short story model , sequence the events , finding out what how to identify the climax(main event) , how to use adjectives , adverbs and other useful languages in describing events, feelings and setting the scene. They will also learn how to write a story after knowing the proper structure of the plot. They practise skimming and scanning through reading the model and listening for specific information to get ideas before writing a short story.

Main Aims

  • To provide process and product writing practice of a short story.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a short story about a traveller who had a bad experience(accident) during his holiday
  • To provide specific information listening practice using a story.
  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a summarising a short story
  • To provide practice of language used for describing nouns and verbs.
  • To provide practice of language used for setting the scene , describing events and feelings.
  • To provide the correct structure of the plot used while writing a short story .

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will start by narrating a short story about a vactation that turned into a diaster for him as he had an accident, then will ask Ss to conclude if they had ever had such a bad experience and that their vacation has turned into nightmare.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Teacher will ask Ss to read the story and elicit what person the story is written in (first-third ) , then ask Ss to read gist and identify main ideas and after doing this they have to complete the task and match the paragraphs to the description (setting the scene , events leading up to the main event - the main event(climax) - what happened in the end and feelings of the main character) meanwhile , the teacher will write them in the correct order on board and after eliciting Ss' answers , he will point out that this is the main structure of any short story. Teacher will ask Ss to read the story again by skimming it for details and then answer ex-3 by putting the events into the correct order and identify the climax event and again will clarify that the climax is the most important event in the story.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Teacher will ask Ss to work in groups and look at the ex.6 in their books to practise using adjectives and ask them complete the task and elicit which adjectives are used to describe nouns given (the canoeing trip - the water - the alligator) , then they are asked to skim the story to find adverbs the writer used in the story in ex.2 which describe the verbs :flowing , said and after that to complete the task (ex.8). Teacher will refer to the useful language box and ask them to read it for further understanding.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Teacher will ask Ss to work in pairs and summarise the model story that they have read using the sentences in exercise 3a with the linkers provided. Teacher will monitor the activity and ask Ss to present the summary to the rest of the class. Teacher will refer to exercise 9 and ask Ss to work individually , read the rubric and answer the questions , then will play the recording for Ss to listen for ideas and make notes in their copybooks under the headings: time , place , events, climax event , ending , feelings. Each student will write his story via Padlet using the the useful language box , his answers of Ex-a and b , keeping in mind that to follow the structure of the story.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Teacher will choose randomly and ask Ss to share their stories with the rest of the class by presenting it via Padlet on the smart board and teacher will take notes . After Ss finish , teacher will ask the Ss if there are any mistakes in their colleague's story , then he gives his feedbak on structure , tenses, format and language used.
