Teaching Practice 2
Pre-Intermediate level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide review, clarification and practice for the students to develop their vocabulary knowledge.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide students some free speaking activity to develop their spoken fluency.
Procedure (37-47 minutes)
I will set them a context in which they are going to decide 5 most important things they will need at a hotel. They will first write them individually and then will discuss in pairs that why they are important for them. By doing this I will see their knowledge on the topic we are going to discuss. Then at the end I am going to get the WCFB.
I will hang some pictures on white board before the lesson starts. They will see them beforehand and I believe they will wonder what they are for. Then I will divide them into 2 groups for this activity and will give them small cards on which the names of the subjects on the pictures are written. Then I will give them 2 minutes to think and will let them hang the cards under the pictures. For this I will also give 2 minutes and the team which finishes first and correctly, will win the game.
In this stage, I will first ask them with which words they had difficulty most. After getting the answers, if they have problems I will draw pictures on WB and help them understand better. Then I will ask them some concept questions to check their understanding of the words they had difficulty with. I will also write the part of speech and phonologic transcriptions of the words on the board. Then I will drill the words as a group and/or individually one by one. The CCQs I will ask might be: Why do we use the "air conditioning"? Do we use the "central heating" in summer or in winter? Can we see any big shopping centers in the "countryside"? What do people do in "gyms"? When you are tired, do you use the "lift" or the stairs? How many beds are there in a "single" room? and in a "twin" room? Do we have "minibars" at home or just at hotels?
I will give them a handout after instructing them how they will fill it. I will test them again and will see how the things I did before worked. They will do it in pairs and then we will check the answers together. Then I will give them another task from WB 5B, which, I believe, is a little bit more challenging than the previous one. They will try to resolve some jumbled words related to hotels. And it will prepare them to free practice which they will have for the last stage of the course.
I will make them pairs but will avoid having the same ones. They will ask each other questions about the hotel experiences they had before. They will use the questions from Ex.4 in Straightforward Unit 5B. And if I have time I will get feedback from the pairs about the experiences of their friends, not their own.
