Main Aims

  • To test and revise the students’ knowledge of countable and uncountable nouns, to provide clarification and practice for the ss to recognize the meaning in the target language as well as about using the countable and uncountable form correctly.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop speaking with accuracy using the target language.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T sets the context by eliciting the word "home" by asking where Ss live. In their English notebook, ss make a circle in the middle of the page. They write the word home. Then, they write as many items that they have around their home. T provides some examples for Ss to write. T elicits from Ss their answers.

Test #1 (5-7 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Ss will classify each noun as countable or uncountable.

Teach (10-12 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the test stage and to provide grammar rules and model sentences for clear understanding

- T starts by telling the Ss a short anecdote focusing on correct and incorrect ways for countable and uncountable and will elicit from Ss if they noticed the incorrect or correct ways in order to identify what they already remember and what their needs are in the lesson. - T shares his computer screen showing Test 1 and choosing random ss and eliciting their answers to check, corrects errors by eliciting from the students. - First T will clarify to the ss the meaning of the countable and uncountable nouns: Countable nouns are used for things we can count with numbers. They can be singular or plural. Uncountable nouns are things that we cannot count with numbers. They are always in singular form. - T writes on the board the model sentences: - I like to eat two hamburgers every Saturday. - They would like three cups of juice. - I need sugar for my coffee. -We need to get ketchup. -She eats a carrot once a week. -Next, T will clarify the form and the structure . -Finally, T writes some sentences for students to fix: Juan bought five watermelons/ watermelons. May I have two waters/ two glasses of water? She would like to get a liter of milk/ milks. The recipe needs a butter/ two teaspoons of butter.

Test #2 (5-8 minutes) • To provide ss with a controlled practice as a test for ss to gauge their achievements

- Ss are asked to copy Test 2 and match with countable and uncountable nouns to make complete sentences to assess what the students have already learned. - Oral FB with the whole class.

Free practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language to encourage accuracy

-Students will dictate items they will purchase at the store to their recording device as a shopping list. -T reminds Ss to use phrases which include the correct use of countable and uncountable nouns. For example, two apples, a kilo of oranges, a loaf of bread, a bag of sugar, sugar.
