Elementary level
Description
Main Aims
-
By the end of the lesson students will have had practise with vocabulary related to rooms and things in the house in the context of parts of the house.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide students with speaking practice about rooms and things in a house in the context of their "dream house"
Procedure (29-42 minutes)
Students will observe two pictures referring to an apartment and a house and will talk about in which one they live. Afterward, the teacher will engage students in further questions in order to apply the lesson to their personal lives.
Students will then read a text about Rebecca´s new house and answer one question as a gist task. The text has evidence of the vocabulary to be reviewed in context.
Students will then be asked to find evidence of all the words in the text that refer to parts of a house and the teacher will highlight them as students detect them.
The teacher will then assign a quick multiple-choice task to check the meaning of the highlighted words. Students will conduct peer corrections in breakout rooms before checking the answers with the teacher. Afterward, Students will practice pronunciation and form as a whole class activity. The form will focus on the parts of speech of the words and consider whether they are singular or plural. The pronunciation will focus on word stress, syllabification, and specific sounds like the "th"
As a controlled practice students will be presented with a gap-fill exercise and will have to complete the description of Vicky's house with the correct expression from the list of words learned in class. Students will then do peer correction and then check the answers in OCFB.
For the free practice, students will be asked to describe their DREAM HOUSE using 5 sentences. This is a writing task to be done individually. The teacher will give a clear example and send it in the chat so the students can model it. Students will share their ideas together in peer discussion before sharing with the teacher and other students in Open class discussion.
The teacher will monitor students during the free practice in breakout rooms and during the final general discussion and identify any mistakes made for delayed error correction.
