To give sts freer speaking practice to help their spoken fluency.
Procedure (34-45 minutes)
T sticks words such as dinner, grand, party, friend, boy etc. on the WB (leaving one side blank for writing the group names and scores. Divides the students in 3 or 4 groups (depending on the number of attendants), asks the groups to choose a name for their teams and asks the teams to match two words to make compound nouns.
Following the mini acticity, T asks the sts to look at the words made by their teams on the WB(grandmother, book shop etc) and elicit the fact that they are compound nouns made of two words. Clarify the difference between a compound noun and a adjective + noun combination. (Using the notes and the mobile phone example from the Pre-Int TB pg 57).
T gives/shows the sts the pictures on page 47 (without words, only the pictures) and, in pairs, sts try and name what they can see. Then T gives the sts ex 3 and asks them to work on their own. The sts match the words in column A with the words in column B and also have to match to the pictures to check understanding. When finished, T gets the WC FB to check answers. T helps with pronunciation if needed and that is the case, drills the pronunciation.
T asks the students to work in pairs and shows explains the instrucions for ex 4 on pg 47 (SB). During the PW, T monitors the discussions, listens for positive comments & use of Eng, listens out for any possible mistake (ie. pronunciation) and corrects if needed.
