Description

In this lesson students will read a text about Unusual Holiday Homes. Lesson will start with some pictures. Teacher will show pictures about two unusual homes and students will then be asked to answer some questions about the pictures. Some vocabulary will be taught in pre-reading stage of the lesson and this is followed by a controlled task. Finally, there is a freer task for learners to use what they have learnt.

Main Aims

  • The intended aim of this lesson is to practise reading for the gist and detail within the context of Unusual Holiday Homes

Subsidiary Aims

  • The intended sub aim of this lesson is to understand the use of first conditional statements in the context of Unusual Holiday Homes in an authentic text

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students for the theme of the lesson

The lesson starts with two pictures. Teacher show ss a hut and tree house and ask "What can you see?" After getting a brief feedback, teacher asks "Imagine you are there, how do you feel?" in order to trigger ss more into the topic. Teacher gives 2 minutes and ss think about the question in groups. Instruction Check Question: "Will you work as a group?" (Yes) Get brief feedback. Learners will then be asked to predict the topic of today's lesson. Then teacher introduces the topic. "Unusual Holiday Homes" will be written on the board.

Pre-Reading (8-9 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible by removing potential blocking vocabulary

Teacher asks students to match the pictures with the words individually for 3 minutes. Instruction Check Question: "Are you going to answer alone?" (Yes) Then T hands out pre-reading task. When ss finish, T asks them to check their answers in pairs for 3 minutes. Then ask them to flip the page and see the answers. After ss finish checking their answers, words will be drilled.

While-Reading #1 (6-7 minutes) • To provide the gist

Ask ss to check the questions for a minute in section 1 in Gist and Detail Questions sheet. Fold the sheet before giving it to ss. After they check the questions, ask them to read the text quickly. Then, ask ss to discuss the questions in groups. ICQ: "Are you going to discuss in pairs?" (No, in groups) Get feedback.

While-Reading #2 (8-9 minutes) • Reading for scan/specific information

Ask ss to unfold the sheet and check the questions in section 2 for a minute. They will then read the text again and answer the questions individually for 7 minutes. ICQ: "Are you going to answer alone?" (Yes) After ss finish, ask them to check their answer in pairs. Then give whole class feedback.

Post-Reading (8-9 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask ss to write five sentences about unusual holiday homes individually. Tell them to check the example on the worksheet(freer task). Give 6 minutes. ICQ: "How much time do you have?" (Six minutes) After they finish, tell them to swap the sheets with the person next to them and read for a minute. Then, ask them to read each other's sentences and finally, provide feedback and error correction.
