Functional Language
Upper Intermediate B2 level

Description

In this lesson, Ss will learn about the functional language, through guided discovery based on a sympathetic conversation. The lesson starts with a conversation amongst Ss, and then the sympathetic conversation is the gist task. This is followed by MFPA and then the controlled practice through made up conversations by Ss and a freer practice via a role-play. Finally a FB will be done by T. and T will do the DEC.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of language used for showing sympathetic phrases in the context of conversations

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for sympathetic phrases in the context of conversations

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

introduce context, T asks Ss CCQ (have you ever been lost? did the person show sympathy?) to introduce subject. This will be done Google slides with an image in Main Room

Presentation through the text (GIST) (5-7 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Ss read conversation and answer Qs in Google Forms in Breakout Rooms TEXT: David: "Hello Mary how are you?" Mary: "I'm not so good David, I just found out my cousin Michael is a little delicate and has contracted Covid". David: "Oh my God! I'm really sorry to hear that, but is he ok?" Mary: "to be honest, he is not ok and we don't have enough money to pay for his medicine, I want to be able to help by raising money for his treatment". David: "do you think it would be ok to raise funds with the help of family and friends"? Mary: "I need ideas David!" David: "you can sell tickets for a ruffle, get sponsors to donate products, and sell the tickets for $10" Mary: "thats a great idea, thank you..." David: "I will buy the first ticket, here's $10" --------------------- Meaning will be covered by the text, and form in functional language, is constant variable or fixed. Ss will read this and answer CCQs: - What is the main problem in this case? - Who do you consider to be more sympathetic? - Which phrase is the most sympathetic for you in the text?

Clarification of the language: (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Ss read the situations in the text and choose one or two appropriate responses from the box. MFPA will be done focusing on the word SYMPATHY and T will drill to show the stress sound, then T will use the phrase "Oh my God! I'm really sorry to hear that, but is he ok?" and model the phrase to show stress words, linking words, and intonation. Finally T will use a scale to show whether is formal, neutral, or informal.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ss make up 3 sympathetic conversations of at least 4 lines amongst each other in Breakout Rooms within the group, it can be any number of students, for 6 minutes and then we have them act it out in main room for 3 minutes.

Freer Practice and FB and DEC (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Ss role play real sympathetic situations they have experienced with the help of the T. for 5 minutes. Then T gives feedback and DEC for 5 minutes.
