Description

In this lesson, students will learn to recognize and to write an article through the analysis of a sample text. They will write individually an article about what can help us to be happy.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

As a lead-in, I will present to the Ss 3 quotes about happiness and ask them which of these quotes they agree with the most. Instruction: What quote about Happiness do you agree with the most? I will send you a link in the chat so you can access the question and quotes. You have 3 minutes to discuss it in pairs. CCQs: How much time do you have? Are you answering individually or in pairs? OCFB: (nominate):Which quote do you prefer? Why?

Exposure (3-4 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

I will ask the Ss to read a piece of article about tips for being happy for SB p 53: "Get a pet" The students will label each part of the text with the following headings: "Tip", "Why this helps" and "How to do it". Instruction: Read the article and label each part, you have 2 minutes in pairs. Quick demo: For example, if "Tip" is the middle of the text, I will put it there. CCQs: How much time do you have? Are you answering individually or in pairs? OCFB: Compare my answers with you answers. Did you get it right?

Useful Language (2-3 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

I show students the text underlined in different colors and ask them some CCQs in order to highlight useful language conventions: CCQs: Is the language simple or complex? Is it formal, informal or neutral? Point out the language underlined in purple: there’s a contraction combined with everyday language, which makes the text neutral. Tip: is it long or is it short? Does it begin with a verb?Does it apply to “How to do it”? Is the verb in present simple or imperative? Does it apply to “How to do it”? Is the writer giving an advice? Can you use the negative for of the verb? Yes. Red: What pronoun does the writer use to speak to the readers? You Green: Is the writer describing a habit? Is he talking about something that is generally true? Something that is generally true.

Productive Task(s) (17-18 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ss will now produce their own article on tips for being happy. They will use the language conventions we have previously identified and will have 18 minutes. Students will work individually. Instruction while demo and sending link: Now it's your turn to write your tip for being happy. I will send you the link to my google slide. Find your name on one of the last slides, in bold. When you find it, you can start writing your tip for being happy. Use the ideas we have previously seen. You can find a list of these ideas on slide 7. You have 18 minutes. Do it individually. CCQs: How much time do you have? Are you answering individually or in pairs?

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Will Ss are writing, I will give them some suggestions and grammar corrections in the slide notes. Then, after the task, I will put Ss in pairs. Ss will read each others articles and check if all instructions were respected. List to check: Tip and how to do it : imperative form (no pronoun) Why this helps: state a fact or something that is generally true in present simple Use second person (you, your…) Can use some contractions Article: Tip Why this helps How to do it Ss will share what they think of each other’s work, and what could be changed/improved. Instructions: Now, Ss, I will put you in pairs.I will send you a link with the list of the ideas you should find in your article. Read each other's article and tick wha you see in your pair's article. Then share your thoughts about your pair's tip for being happy. You have 7 mins. CCQs: How much time do you have?
