Description

in this lesson, students will learn about grammar related to past and present ability, and will have the oportunity to both practice in a controlled environment and freely produce their own sentences using the TL.

Materials

Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about present and past ability in the context of remarkable people

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will show students a picture of remarkable people (people famous for a paprticular talent) and will ask students "What is the thing you do best?", "What age did you first start doing this?" and "Have you shared your talent in any way?". Ss will answer in an orderly manner. This will last for 2 minutes

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T will instruct students to read a short text talking about Daniel tamet T will ask students to find sentences that include can/can't or could/couldn't. Ss will have 5 minutes to read the text. T will ask Ss to go into breakout rooms and discuss the sentences they found. Ss will have 3 minutes. T will show students the sentences.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T will ask Ss to answer true or false questions about the tense of the sentences and their predictions on their use, in order for them to be ready for the MFP part. T will ask Ss to discuss their answers in breakout rooms. Ss will have 2 minutes to discuss.

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T will ask Ss to identify what the name of the highlighted parts in the TL are, in order for them to identify the form of the sentences. The Ss are expected to answer with "subject, modal. verb, complement/ the rest". This will be the case for: present with 'can', present with 'to be (present simple)+ able to', past with 'could', and past with 'to be (past simple) + able to'. T will ask CCQ such as : 'Which one would you use to talk about your current skills?' and 'What kind of things could you do when you were younger?'

Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T will instruct students to filll in the blanks with the correct form of the sentence. T will do a demonstration with a dummy question. T will give students 3 minutes to answer. Ss will share their answers in breakout rooms. Ss will have 2 minutes

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T will set up the next task for Ss to complete. T will give the following instructions: To role play as a job interviewer and a job applicant. The interviewer must ask the applicant about his skills. After they finish the questions, they must swap roles and ask the other person about their skills. This will take 3 minutes for each part Ss will have 2 minutes to share their thoughts on the activity

Feedback (4-6 minutes) • To get students to produce their own sentences involving the topic at hand

T will ask students to talk about someone they consider to possess extraordinary abilities. Ss will answer in an orderly fashion. Students will be asked to participate openly in the discussion.
