Procedure (29-40 minutes)
- Teacher shows a list of some modern and traditional home appliances, and the students must decide if each element is modern or traditional and also say how important is each element from 1 to 5. Teacher wording: Please analyse each element and decide if each one is modern or traditional, and tell your partner how important is each element for you from 1 to 5. You have 3 minutes. The appliances they will see in the presentation are: Air conditioning - Fan - Credit card - Cash - Computer games - Board games - Dishwasher - Washing clothes by hand - Sending text messages - Sending letters and faxes. (They will be presented in disorder and with images to help them understand each word) -Teacher demos the first two examples. -Teacher asks them to discuss in pairs in the BoRs - T elicits a few ideas from learners (Individually and it´s a good opportunity to practice pronunciation) - T conducts OCFB and writes learners’ ideas on the board.
-Teacher shows two paragraphs of a text, and asks students to create a tittle for the reading. Teacher wording: Please read quickly this text and create a title for it. Let´s be creative and it can be any tittle. You have 4 minutes -Teacher asks them to discuss in pairs in the BoRs -T elicits a few ideas from learners (Individually) -T conducts OCFB and writes learners’ ideas on the board. -T asks ICQs to check the understanding of the activity: Are you reading or listening?
(Meaning) Teacher presents five collocations about modern and traditional home appliances and five pictures about the same elements. Students must match the pictures with the names. Teacher wording: Here we have these pictures, and some names, you have to match the picture with the corresponding name of the element. You have 4 minutes, and please work individually. Teacher asks them to compare in pairs in the BoRs. Teacher presents the correct answers. The collocations to be presented are: Central heating, Vacuum cleaner, Electric fan, Coal fires, Washing machine. (Form) As all the words have the same structure (Adjective - noun), teacher elicits parts of speech of each compound word. The idea is to come up together with the part of speech. Teacher wording: Is this an adjective or a noun? (The same with the five words). 3 minutes (Pronunciation) Teacher asks students to repeat the pronunciation of each word. Teacher wording: Please repeat after me the pronunciation of each word. 3 minutes
Teacher present five definitions (Each one for each word seen previously) and students must write the correct word based on the definition. Teacher wording: Here we have these definitions and you have to write the name of the correct element in front of the definition. You have 3 minutes and work individually. -Teacher asks them to discuss in pairs in the BoRs -T conducts OCFB and shows the answers on the whiteboard. -T asks ICQs to check the understanding of the activity: Are you writing or speaking?
Teacher asks students a question to discuss. The question is: Imagine you have a new house, which elements are necessary for you and why? Teacher wording: Please discuss with your partner about this question: Imagine you have a new house, which elements are necessary for you and why? You have 5 minutes. -Teacher asks ICQs to check the understanding of the activity: Are we writing or speaking?
