Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of collocations with 'first' in the context of people first experience and reaction

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation and speaking at length in the context of first experience

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Focus Ss's attention on the picture and elicit the word 'first'. Ask 'What word better describes this F1 racing car' (first). Speak with me: What do I do first thing in the morning? Ss choose options 1-8, posting in the chat box. Elicit Ss' opinion and the phrase 'first thing'.

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Tell Ss to read the sentences. Demonstrate in slides and send a link to google.forms to match the meaning of the phrases to correct options. Ss check in pairs, in BOR, then as OC. Draw Ss's attention to the highlighted phrases in the answers and proceed to Clarification of TL.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Relate to the phrases from the text. T and Ss together for a minute. Demonstrate the slide #4 ICQ: Do we write something? no Do we work together? yes How long...? a minute Ask CCQs: Did you notice phrases with the word 'first' in the text? yes Are there more than one phrase? yes To understan the meaning of a phrase we need to learn it and remember. Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Cover aspects of MFP briefly of in slides, ask CCQs: Are we talking about one word 'first'? No. Is 'first' a part of phrases here? Yes. Clarify the meaning of the word 'first', pronunciation, form and connotation (neutral), then refer to collocations with the word 'first. Provide a link to the Macmillan dictionary, showing a procedure on how to work on the lexis for the future. Do phrases have different meaning-form-pronunciation? Yes. Share a link to Jamboard to Ss to work cooperatively or in pairs, depending on the number of Ss and ask CCQs to work on MFP fully.

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Provide Ss with a link to complete Multiple-choice questions in google.forms. Check in pairs and as OC.

Semi-Controlled Practice (0-0 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Free Practice (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

As the first part of a freer practice of TL, Ss are told to speak in pairs up to 2 minutes, they have to react to the situation, using phrases from the lesson as replies. Ss are instructed to use given prompts (2 phrases from the lesson) to role-play 2 situations. As the second part, Ss work in pairs. T demonstrates slides.Ss are instructed to work together and discuss with a partner the time when they FIRST learnt a new skill, or drove a car, or dated somebody, fell in love or cooked a delicious meal. Ss may also reflect on the situations when the FIRST bought something extraordinary or expensive.
