Teaching Practice 1
Intermediate level

Description

This lesson will focus on improving students' reading skills. It utilizes Page 56 of Speakout (2nd Ed.) with focus on the reading passage. It excludes the final section of the reading, "Bus stop libraries Bogota".

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about technology in the context of low-tech alternatives.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of difficult vocabulary words.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask the Ss to answer the two questions below: Do you think new technology is always better? Can it be a bad thing? Ss will discuss their answers in breakout rooms.

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible by introducing vocabulary

Students will use Jamboard and match words to the image that is most closely related to the sentence. Each group of students will have their own 3 slides to use. https://jamboard.google.com/d/1ZOg13s4DmJCBnVUTW3WZMTpsuX5V8in3xjcHGfmNe6I/edit?usp=sharing This will be followed by feedback on the Ss' answers. Then they will be asked CQs that are posted here: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1CmG7Gg8CS3sCV-yF5G7BGcziTANcflr0fs3K3FzVOPA/edit?usp=sharing After CQs, which will be done Ss-T, form will be looked at. We will go over the sentences used in CQs and use them to identify the part of speech. Finally, we will go over the pronunciation. This will include phonetic transcription of each word. The main aim is to find the syllable with stress on it. Students will do this with the chat feature answering either "1" or "2" to "Is it the first option, or the second option?" https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1CmG7Gg8CS3sCV-yF5G7BGcziTANcflr0fs3K3FzVOPA/edit?usp=sharing

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students will given the text along with the following questions: Would you watch a movie if this theatre came to your town? Do you think Playpump is a good idea? Why or why not? After discussing in groups we will move to OCFB where we will discuss some of the ideas the students came up with in groups. For question 1 I will ask who would visit this theatre and pick one person to say why. For question 2 I will do the same, who thinks it is a good idea and who doesn't. I will pick a different student.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Next students will go through the reading more closely, looking for answers to the following true or false statements which they will answer on Google Forms: https://forms.gle/jSo3szMEW3GgsPWP9 The introduction says that faster is always better. The Rural Academy is the same as other movie theatres. The Rural Academy made this moving theatre because they don't like cities. The Playpump makes children work hard to get water. The Playpump saves the children time and lets them play more. With their answers recorded they will discuss their answers in groups. After a couple minutes, the groups will be changed so that students can share their responses with other groups. After answers are discussed as groups, the breakout rooms will be closed and the answers will be discussed in the main session. Then I will give feedback if there are any noticeable mistakes.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students at this point will have some time to discuss low-tech entertainment they enjoy with the following questions as a rough guide: Do you think it is good to use low-tech entertainment sometimes? Is there any low-tech entertainment you like? Do you prefer to live in an urban area, or a rural area? Do you think one is better than the other? They will work in groups and the groups will be periodically shuffled to allow them to hear from their classmates. At the end I will discuss what I heard in a winding-down conversation and address and errors I heard as a brief DEC period.
