Description

In this lesson, the Ss will practice reading for gist and scanning in the context of fake news. The lesson starts with a lead-in where the teacher presents a funny video of a TV presenter telling the sports news. Ss will need to respond to a task designed by the teacher for this stage. Then the T elicits the challenging vocabulary. After that, Ss will read for gist and followed by scanning. Finally, Ss will have a discussion and the T gives them feedback.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will have practiced reading for gist and scanning in the context of fake news.

Subsidiary Aims

  • For the students to practice speaking about their sources to get news and their opinion about the credibility of the news on social media.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

T greets the Ss and starts the lesson once there is a good number of Ss. T asks the Ss to take notes about what kind of tv show they are watching and to give their impression about the TV presenter. T presents a video where there is a funny TV presenter presenting the sports news in a funny way. Ss are asked to participate with their notes and impressions.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-T presents sentences that contain the challenging vocabulary for the Ss and elicits the meaning using CCQs: Her lawyer says some of the workers' claims were an outright fabrication. fabrication (n), - Does it mean to produce fabric? (no) - Is it related to the news? (yes) - Does it mean to tell facts? (no) Other words are "accurate, exaggeration, prejudice, bias, bogus, and credible". -T pronounces the words and corrects the Ss mistakes. - T asks Ss to do an online exercise where they categorize the words into two categories: Truths & Untruths. - Ss work in pairs/ groups to do the exercise and T gives them feedback

While-Reading 1 (reading for gist) (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging gist reading task

- T asks the students to gist read the text and think of a suitable title. - Ss read the text quickly in 3 minutes and think of a title - T sends Ss to breakout rooms to compare in pairs/ groups their ideas. - T asks Ss to share their titles with the rest of the class.

While-Reading 2 (scanning and reading for details) (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading task.

- T asks the students to scan the text and answer with true or false in response to the statements shown on the screen. They should think of a reason for choosing their answers. - Ss read the text and find the answers individually. - T sends Ss to breakout rooms to compare in pairs/ groups their answers. - T discusses the answers/shows the AK (according to the remaining time of the session).

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned.

- T asks Ss to take notes about their sources to get reliable news and their opinion of the news posted on social media platforms. - Ss take notes individually then discuss their ideas with their partner/ group.
