Like, love, hate + ing or to and enjoy, mind + ing verbs
upper basic to intermediate ADULT students level

Description

In this lesson, the students will learn about the like, love, hate + "ing" or "to" verbs and enjoy, mind + ing verbs through guided discovery starting with a conversation about collecting beer can labels. This will be followed by a slide presentation introducing some sentences, trying to raise awareness, asking learners to analyze the sentences, reflect on their structure, and hypothesize some rules. Students will be given some controlled and free practice exercises focusing on the grammar point. There will be break-out rooms in the Zoom class allowing learns to speak and practice the structures. Attention and practice will be given to the formation of "ing" forms on verbs finished by consonants preceded by a vowel where the final consonant need to be doubled.

Materials

Abc Power Point presentation / video

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking and writing practice about like, love, hate, enjoy and mind verbs usage

Subsidiary Aims

  • Observe the correct spelling of verbs that finish in a consonant preceded by a vowel.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Talk about collecting beer can labels and introduce Mr. Hip, who loves practicing yoga, and is the theme of an IPA beer produced in Vancouver, Canada.

Break out rooms conversation about collecting items, activities that they like or hate doing, (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through sentences and students conversation

Read these sentences. What do you notice about them? Ask these questions to your colleague, and write down the answers: What do you like collecting? OR What do you like to collect? Which activities do you love doing or hate doing? OR Which activities do you love to do or hate to do? _______________xxx________________xxx________________ Do you *enjoy doing* any physical exercise? Which one? Do you *mind getting* up early? At what time do you normally get up?

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ask students: When you look at these sentences what do you notice? Mr. Hip likes doing yoga and putting his glass everywhere!! Mr. Mr. Mr. Hip likes to do yoga and to put his glass everywhere!! Mr. Hip loves doing exercises!! Mr. Hip loves to do exercises!! Which activities do you love doing or hate doing? Which activities do you love to do or hate to do? __________________xxx_______________xxx______________________ Do you *enjoy doing* any physical exercise? Do you *enjoy cooking*? Do you *mind getting* up early? Do you *mind driving*?

Clarification in 2 separated slides (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language in 2 slides. 1st slide: like / don’t like, love / hate, prefer / prefer not. 2nd slide: enjoy / don't enjoy, don't mind.

An exercise will be given to students asking them to look at the examples. Then write sentences about themselves choosing from some verbs, and write down their various options. This will be done with 2 slides: 1st slide: like / don’t like, love/hate, prefer/prefer not. 2nd slide: enjoy/don't enjoy, don't mind. like / don’t like love / hate prefer / prefer not Examples: (fly) I like flying OR I like to fly I don’t like flying OR I don’t like to fly (play cards) I love playing cards OR I love to play cards I hate playing cards OR I hate to play cards (shop) I prefer shopping at the mall OR I prefer to shop at the mall OR I prefer not to shop at the mall 1) (go to museums)_____________________________________ 2) (drive)_______________________________________________ 3) (get up early)_________________________________________ 4) (do exercises)________________________________________ 5) (make the bed)_______________________________________ 6) (cook)_______________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ enjoy/don’t enjoy don’t mind Examples: (be alone) I enjoy being* alone OR I don’t enjoy being* alone (clean) I don’t mind cleaning* the house by myself. 1) (go to museums)_____________________________________ 2) (drive)_______________________________________________ 3) (get up early)_________________________________________ 4) (do exercises)________________________________________ 5) (make the bed)_______________________________________ 6) (cook)___________________________________

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

A "Fill in the gaps" exercise will be given asking the students to choose from the different forms that they can use with the verbs.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept and form check further and prepare students for free practice

Another slide will be presented asking students to look carefully at the sentences. Then I will ask them what do they notice? Mr. Hip likes doing yoga (do) Mr. Hip doesn’t like running (run) I love collecting labels (collect) I don’t like wrapping gifts (wrap) Lucy hates swimming (swim) She doesn’t hate watching TV (watch) They love getting up early (get up) They don’t like staying in bed (stay) Another slide will list and highlight some of the verbs that have their consonant doubled when we add the "ing" Discuss with your colleague and tell me what did you discover? Run + ing = Running Jog + ing = Jogging Put + ing = Putting Get + ing = Getting Shop + ing = Shopping Stop + ing = Stopping Wrap + ing = Wrapping Swim + ing = Swimming Students may be placed in break-out rooms to discuss their discoveries.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Another fill-in-the-gaps exercise will be given to students. I will ask them to pay attention and use the verbs in the brackets. There will be cases where they will need to double the consonants in the verbs, which was explained before. 1.  He…………………………(love/run) marathons, but he  ……………………………..(hate/shop).   2.  I  ………………………….(not like/dance), I  ……………………………………(prefer/jog).   3.  They…………………(love/ride) horses, but they….………….(not like/learn) English.   4.  Tom…………………(enjoy/listen) to music. We really………………………..(enjoy/go) to the cinema and………………(eat) popcorn. 8. We………………(not mind/stop) at the mall for the gifts, but we….…..(prefer not/wrap) them.   9. I…………………………(not like/sail) a boat, but I……..………………(prefer/swim).  If we have time, another exercise will be given where students will "freely" write sentences about the clip-arts they see. They will need to use the verbs like, love, hate, prefer, enjoy, mind. If the time is over I will give this task as homework.
